LED Lighting Design Engineer
Location: Berkshire
My client, a growing organisation in the energy efficiency and sustainable design sector, is seeking a technically capable and motivated LED Lighting Design Engineer to join their expanding design team. This role presents an excellent opportunity for either a qualified electrical design engineer or a degree-qualified designer from an architectural, interior, or lighting design background who is looking to upskill and gain valuable on-site experience in the field of sustainable lighting.
The Role
The successful candidate will contribute to the design and implementation of user-focused, regulation-compliant LED lighting solutions across a range of environments, including healthcare, education, public buildings, and bespoke specialist spaces. The position involves collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams and directly with clients to transform project requirements into practical and efficient lighting systems that enhance both performance and user experience.
Key Responsibilities:
Liaise with clients to understand unique project and site-specific requirements.
Create tailored lighting layouts that address functional, aesthetic, and regulatory considerations.
Work closely with electrical engineers, project managers, sales teams, contractors, and estates teams.
Participate in site surveys and integrate findings into finalised designs.
Select appropriate lighting fittings and technologies to achieve performance goals.
Prepare detailed technical documentation, drawings, and installation packages.
Ensure designs align with energy efficiency and sustainability benchmarks (e.g., BREEAM, WELL).
Develop and revise layouts using AutoCAD, Revit, or similar CAD tools.
Use lighting simulation software (Dialux, Relux, AGi32) to model and analyse lighting performance.
Perform photometric calculations, assess glare, energy consumption, and compliance.
Overlay lighting systems onto architectural and M&E drawings.
Adhere to relevant regulations and standards, including BS5266, CIBSE guidelines, and LG02.
Support on-site commissioning, testing, and validation of lighting systems.
Deliver comprehensive handover packages including guides, manuals, and performance data.
Qualifications:
Candidates should meet one of the following criteria:
A degree-qualified Electrical Design Engineer, OR
A degree-qualified Architectural, Interior, or Lighting Designer seeking to gain hands-on technical and site-based experience.
Additional desirable qualifications:
Proficiency in Dialux, Relux, or AGi32.
Competency in AutoCAD or Revit.
Familiarity with energy modelling and sustainable building practices.
Knowledge of relevant standards and regulations.
18th Edition Wiring Regulations (advantageous but not essential for non-electrical backgrounds).
Experience & Skills:
Demonstrated ability in lighting design or related project work.
Experience working within cross-functional project teams.
Confidence conducting site visits and integrating findings into technical plans.
Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with clients and technical teams.
A proactive, detail-oriented approach with the ability to manage time and tasks independently.
