About the role
The NAAB is recruiting up to four social workers to undertake Merton‑compliant age assessments on age‑disputed asylum seekers across the UK. The role offers the opportunity to develop expertise in the field of age assessment, working with local authorities and partners.
Key Responsibilities
* Develop a comprehensive understanding of the Merton age assessment process.
* Represent the Home Office in local authority settings, delivering high‑quality age assessments and collaborating with professionals such as social workers, teachers, foster carers, etc.
* Support the Home Office response to legal challenges, including preparation of court statements and giving evidence.
* Apply legislation and case law relevant to age assessment across all UK jurisdictions.
* Use a child‑centred, trauma‑informed approach and address any child protection or safeguarding concerns that arise.
* Adjust practice based on feedback from the quality‑assurance process.
* Contribute to the NAAB’s engagement strategy by delivering training to local authorities.
Training and Support
You will receive comprehensive training: Age Assessment and Level 2 Personal Safety, delivered online and on the job with ongoing support from managers and colleagues.
Travel
The role involves frequent national travel, typically once or twice a week, with occasional overnight stays. Travel expenses are covered by the Home Office. Non‑assessment days may be worked from home or the nearest NAAB Home Office site.
Qualifications
Hold a Social Work Degree and be a qualified and registered social worker with Social Work England (or the equivalent in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland).
