We are looking for a Registered Nurse/Practitioner to join our team as Band 6 Deputy Ward Leader for our Surgical Day case unit, in our brand new Planned Care Centre. The East Midlands Planned Care Centre is a newly renovated, impressive building which opened in December 2024. It is a stand alone unit on site at the Leicester General Hospital. It was a multi million pound investment build to improve care and reduce waiting lists for the people of Leicester and beyond. The vacancy post is part of the ITAPS team and will deputise within 2 areas: The Surgical day case unit- consisting of TAA, Recovery and Discharge and The Post operative unit- which houses an 18 bedded ward dedicated to elective day case / post surgical activity. We need a highly motivated practitioner to join us in this evolving team that will grow and develop over time. The Surgical unit will deliver Daycase surgical activity from a number of specialties. The East Midlands Planned Care Centre will see a high volume of patient's per day. It will be a fast paced environment and will require a highly motivated, adaptable candidate who will lead be example and teach new members of the team. The surgical unit with offer same day discharge to patients and the nurses will lead this process, with the additional skill of criteria lead discharge. There will be an post-op ward, staffed day and night to facilitate patients and their post- op recovery period. • To be a visible clinical expert, leading daily; providing direction, effective and inspirational leadership. • Responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation. • Leadership and supervision of others carrying out all aspects of the caring process. • Deputise and take charge of the given area regularly. • Participate in the effective clinical leadership and management of the team. • Actively contribute to the improvement of services and the quality of care provision. • Act as a role model, mentoring, teaching, assessing and supporting students and learners and participate in the education, development and mentorship of other staff. • Confident to Admit/Recover/Discharge patients independently. About the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust: http://www.leicestershospitals.nhs.uk/aboutus/work-for-us/current-vacancies/ • Support the Team Leader/Matron to ensure the ward/Department environment is safe, clean, comfortable and well maintained in line with patient and public expectations. • Ensure that the delivery of care to own patients and for all patients when in charge meet the standards determined by the Sister/Charge Nurse/Team Leader. • Ensure that self and team members act at all times to provide a personalised service to patients in accordance with agreed standards and promotes quality, diversity and rights. • Contribute to setting, maintaining and monitoring of standards of care to the optimum level and lead the improvement of care, through benchmarking, audit and research. • In the absence of the Team Leader ensure there is adequate support, safe mentorship and supervision of learner nurses and all staff • Proactively seek feedback on patient and public experience in order to address concerns in a timely manner and build on success. please see job description/person specification for further details on the role This advert closes on Monday 23 Feb 2026
