Research Assistant in Textile Material Recycling

The Role

Applications are invited for 3 Research Fellow positions to work in the Catalysis for Chemical Circularity Group in the School of Engineering, University of Surrey. (Part‑time, fixed‑term contract up to Feb 2026). The main role of the post holder will be to carry out research in textile chemical recycling into value‑added chemicals using mechanochemistry, developing research expertise and portfolios in this emerging field towards a circular textile economy. This interdisciplinary project is in close collaboration with a leading company in textile design and manufacturing.


Project Objectives

* Screen mechanochemical conditions for textile valorisation into useful chemicals.
* Develop catalytic pyrolysis protocols for textile thermal conversion.
* Achieve material‑to‑chemical conversion > 50 %.


Key Responsibilities

* Conduct data analysis and ensure the validity and reliability of data at all times.
* Maintain accurate and complete records of all findings.
* Present the work to industrial collaborators, as advised by the supervisors.
* Report on a regular basis about the progress of the work at meetings with the academic leaders.
* Take initiatives in the planning of research.
* Write reports for submission to research sponsors.


About You

The successful candidate should have a MSc and above degree in Material Science, Chemistry or Chemical Engineering, or a closely related discipline. The candidate should have a strong background in experimental catalyst design, characterisation and testing. Prior knowledge of mechanochemistry, polymer chemistry and physics, plastic chemical recycling is especially welcomed.


Essential Experiences, Knowledge and Skills

* Practical experience within a research environment.
* Experience with experimental design, catalyst design and catalytic reactions.
* Practical experience in a broad range of techniques in material and chemical characterisation.
* Ability to conduct a detailed review of recent literature.
