Founded in 2006, Q-Mass has grown to employ nearly 50 people with an annual turnover approaching £12M from our base in East Kilbride. Following a very successful acquisition in 2024, which has enhanced the business even further, 2025 and beyond will be very exciting times ahead of growth and expansion for Q-Mass and as a result, we are now looking to expand our very talented workforce by recruiting an EDM Operator/Programmer (Wire & Spark Erosion) to report into the Operations Manager.
Q-Mass are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented EDM Programmer/Operator with hands-on experience in both wire and spark erosion. The ideal candidate will be responsible for programming, setting, and operating EDM machinery to produce high-tolerance components for complex engineering parts.
Responsibilities
* Program and operate CNC EDM wire and spark erosion machines, namely Agi Charmilles and Makino.
* Interpret technical drawings, CAD models, and engineering specifications.
* Create and modify CNC programs using CAM software.
* Select appropriate electrodes, wires, machining parameters for optimal performance and surface finish.
* Set up workpieces using jigs, fixtures, and precision measuring tools.
* Perform in-process inspection using micrometers, height gauges, and CMM (where applicable).
* Monitor machine performance and conduct routine maintenance as needed.
* Work collaboratively with manufacturing, engineering, and quality control to meet tight deadlines and specifications.
* Ensure compliance with safety procedures and quality standards.
* Maintain accurate documentation for job tracking, tooling setup, and quality assurance.
* Engender a culture of ‘Continuous Improvement’ and embrace the QHSE systems employed by the business
* Attend staff and client meetings where required
* Any other duties as required by your Line Manager
Qualifications and experience
* Proven experience as an EDM operator/programmer (minimum 3 years preferred).
* Strong understanding of wire EDM and die sinking principles and technologies.
* Proficiency with CNC programming and CAM software.
* Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings and GD&T.
* Experience with tight-tolerance, high-precision components (±0.005mm or better).
* Good organizational skills, attention to detail, and problem-solving abilities.
* Strong commitment to workplace safety and continuous improvement.
Desirable
* Experience with CAD design software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD).
* Knowledge of lean manufacturing and 5S principles.
* Prior experience in Oil & Gas, Aerospace or Defence parts engineering.
