An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Vascular department for a Surgical Care Practitioner (SCP).
Gloucestershire and Swindon Vascular Network operate a 'hub and spoke' approach, with the Vascular in-patient service being at the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital (GRH), the 'hub' and the spokes offering services at Cheltenham General Hospital (CGH) and Great Western Hospital (GWH).
The post holder will be based at GRH with the existing Vascular SCP team; however, as part of the role, there is a requirement to travel to CGH and at times GWH or other community hospitals within Gloucestershire.
The SCPs are part of the Vascular surgical team, acting as first or second assistant, assisting with open, endovascular, and hybrid Vascular procedures. The SCP liaises with the pre-operative, theatre, and post-operative ward teams to ensure safety and continuity of care, performing pre-operative visits to the patient, explaining the procedure, and gaining written consent. With support, partake and assist with venous intervention.
You will have the opportunity to use advanced practice skills in Vascular/SCP clinics for a complex patient group.
Main duties of the job
The post holder is expected to demonstrate an advanced degree of knowledge, skill, manual dexterity, and understanding in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, providing a competent and efficient service. To act as a first or second assistant in the operating theatre. Perform pre and post-operative visits, consent patients, open and close wounds, assist with haemostasis, and undertake specific surgical interventions as per agreed competency levels.
Work under indirect supervision, examining and assessing peripheral vascular disease, making decisions about treatment, investigations, and admission, follow-up and discharge, referring on to vascular consultant colleagues when reached the limit of own expertise.
Participate in SCP/vascular clinics. Collate data on National Vascular Register, Mortality, and Morbidity.
Contribute to the specialist area of research, clinical governance, and local and national audits.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* Active registration with NMC or HCPC
* UK recognised Degree in healthcare/nursing
Experience
* Substantial experience working in an acute clinical environment
* Experience as a surgical care practitioner in vascular speciality
* Experience working as a surgical first assistant preferably in speciality
Knowledge/Skills
* Personally resilient and able to manage complexity and work in an ambiguous or changing environment
* Able to effectively and appropriately escalate concerns to reduce risk and promote patient safety.
* Professional leadership qualities, assertive, self-confident individual
* Demonstrates ability to question and challenge practice in a constructive way so that standards of patient care are continually evaluated and improved.
