The role of Trust and Tax Assistant is a vital support position within trust administration, investment reporting, accounting, and complex tax compliance. The successful candidate will work closely with Trust and Tax Managers in a busy Private Client Service, handling domestic trusts and high-net-worth individuals from the UK and abroad.
We manage a wide range of trust work, private clients’ financial affairs, succession planning, and tax advice. The role suits someone with good knowledge and experience in accounts preparation, excellent numerical and written communication skills, and some UK tax compliance experience. Roles and Responsibilities (this is a broad but not exhaustive list)
1. You will prepare trust accounts for review by the trust manager, inputting financial data from bank statements, investment statements, tax packs, and client accounts to produce annual financial statements.
2. After training, you will become proficient with our trust and probate software, including Troika for trust administration and Digita for Self-Assessment tax reporting, along with other tax software like Inheritance Tax Returns.
3. Extensive use of Excel for financial reporting and data management is required; strong controls, checks, and data handling skills are essential.
4. You will handle compliance work, including producing trust accounts and tax returns (Self-Assessment and Inheritance Tax) and maintaining the FPTCA database as needed.
5. You should be flexible and willing to undertake a variety of practical tasks.
6. Over time, you will liaise with trustees, beneficiaries, investment managers, and external advisers, participating in client meetings and communicating legal advice clearly and persuasively.
7. You will manage all aspects of trust administration, understanding each trust case thoroughly to determine accounting treatments and major events. Knowledge of discretionary and life interest trusts is preferred; further training will be provided.
8. You will support the Trust and Tax Managers in monitoring and planning for major trust and family events.
9. You will prepare accurate trust and individual tax returns, ensuring timely submissions.
10. You should be adaptable and willing to undertake other fiduciary, financial, and tax-related tasks as assigned.
11. You will research complex UK tax compliance issues and new legislation to support team members in the division.
12. You must comply with all relevant legal and regulatory obligations, including SRA standards and principles.
Qualifications and Experience
* Ideally AAT Level 4
* Experience in accounts preparation is essential
* Some knowledge of Self-Assessment processes and deadlines for trusts and individuals is desirable but not mandatory
* Proficiency in computer use and management reporting from databases
* Intermediate Excel skills
