Consultant Emergency Physician

The closing date is 16 April 2026

Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust has recently become one of the first vertically integrated health and care organisations in the country. The development of an Integrated Care Organisation (ICO) through the acquisition of Torbay and Southern Devon Health and Care NHS Trust by South Devon Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust has now taken place and is a major enabler in the transformation of services and the development of a new approach to health and social care. The Trust runs Torbay Hospital as well as community hospitals and hubs across Devon, employing approximately 6,000 staff. We will develop and redesign services to meet the needs of our local population, ensuring coordinated and integrated care that benefits service users. Services will be responsive and flexible, linking seamlessly with partner organisations such as primary care and mental health services. Opportunities to be part of designing and delivering innovative new services in Torbay and South Devon, including more integrated and streamlined care pathways for patients, are available to all current and newly appointed staff.

Job responsibilities

Clinical duties will be shared with the present Consultants and will include all responsibilities normally expected in any major Emergency Department in the UK. The appointee will ensure efficient and effective reception, resuscitation, diagnosis and management of all emergencies attending the department and will ensure:

* Emergency patients are promptly assessed and early decisions are made as to whether to admit to inpatient beds, operating theatres or specialist units, and to other hospitals when necessary, or to arrange early discharge. Good liaison with other specialties will provide the highest standard of care.
* The ED Rapid Assessment team is fully staffed with senior doctor presence from 08:00‑22:00 seven days a week.
* Patients requiring follow‑up are referred to the appropriate outpatient clinic or to the care of their General Practitioner, and discharge information keeps the GP informed of the outcome of Emergency attendances.
* While on duty, maintain an overview of the flow of emergency patients through the Directorate.
* Work pro‑actively with the re‑enablement team (physio, OT and social worker) within the Directorate to safely manage early discharge of Emergency patients from the department.
* Maintain an excellent training environment for all clinical staff.

It is expected that the post holder will undertake routine daily clinical work alongside junior medical staff, to monitor, audit and improve standards of care for patients attending the department. Other responsibilities include:

* Junior Staff: Recruitment, appointment and educational supervision including educational contracts, regular appraisal, organisation of study leave, annual leave and rotas.
* Budget: Co‑operate with the Deputy Medical Director and Divisional General Manager on budget issues.
* Communication: Responsibility for and arrangement of communication and liaison with all other medical and service departments within the Trust as well as other Trusts.
* Teaching: Active role in the junior doctor training programme.

On‑call Commitments

When on call, the Emergency Consultants are responsible for the patients within the department. The Consultant on call will be expected to return for any Trauma calls and to respond to the needs of the medical team as required.

Person Specification

Consultant will be required to have the following qualifications and experience:

* Full GMC registration
* CCT or CESR specialist registration
* Graduate of a UK medical school
* ATLS/APLS/ALS
* Other relevant degrees
* At least three years in higher training in Emergency Medicine

Disclosure and Barring Service Check

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and a Disclosure and Barring Service check will be required.
