Exeter
Devon County Council
Asset manager
Posted: 14 June
Offer description

Are you an experienced Technician, Graduate or Engineer with Asset management experience particularly in the delivery of Bridges and Structures projects, and looking for that next step in your career?

If so, Devon County Council could be a great fit for you, as we are looking to grow our Structures’ Asset Management team with the appointment of an Engineer to support the team. The Asset Management team are responsible for 3500 bridges and structures and fulfil the internal client role to set the strategic direction and delivery of all aspects of our asset management.

Who will I be working with?

The Engineering Design Group is a department of over 100 people. We are Engineers and Technicians who are passionate about delivering high quality infrastructure projects in our community. You will be working in a team of approximately 8 people supported by a Bridge Asset Manager. You will also be given the opportunity to support junior members of the team. We are supported by our colleagues across the broader fields of Environment, Highway & Traffic Management and Planning to name a few.

What projects will I be working on?

Our projects span a huge range from the inspection, maintaining and replacement of our current infrastructure assets through to new bridges and structures on cycle trails, recycling centres, urban link roads and flood risk projects. The Asset Management team are responsible for monitoring the condition of our structural assets, setting short and long term strategies for their maintenance and defining a programme of repair or replacement. The Team are currently working on an Outline Business Case for the £45m replacement of two moving bridges supporting one of Exeter’s major traffic corridors.

The wider group are also working on similar large projects; the North Devon Link Road improvement project has just completed (£46m) and the A382 MRN project in Newton Abbot (£44m) is currently gearing up to make a start. EDG staff are also Project Managing the construction of a new rail station at Okehampton in partnership with Network Rail. We are also reviewing our future programme of bridge assessment work and are keen to grow our design/ assessment teams. This work will all form part of supporting our Bridge Asset Manager and fulfilling the Intelligent Client role.

We are about to embark on an initiative to utilise drone and photogrammetry techniques to survey/ map our structures’ assets; in which you would play an integral role.

A green future

Devon County Council declared a climate emergency in 2019. Since then, decarbonisation has been high on the agenda when considering what we build and how we maintain it. In 2022 we were successful in bidding for Live Labs funding to trial innovations aimed at decarbonising highway infrastructure. We intend that this project will change the way in which we think about the design and delivery of highway projects and we’re enthusiastic about meeting the challenge.

What benefits will I get?

You’ll get a competitive salary, plus a range of benefits that include:

1. Career progression up to a salary of £47,754 following an established route of necessary qualifications and experience;
2. Experience and opportunity also given for career progression to Senior Management roles;
