Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join the University Hospitals Dorset’s Clinical Neurophysiology Team as a Healthcare Science Assistant. We are looking for a reliable and detail-oriented team member who supports high-quality patient care through scientific and technical services. The successful candidate will assist qualified healthcare scientists and professionals in delivering accurate and timely diagnostic and monitoring services, including supporting clinics, preparing equipment, managing samples or data, and ensuring processes are carried out safely and effectively. Key Responsibilities

* Support the delivery of diagnostic, monitoring, or therapeutic services by performing delegated tasks under the supervision of registered healthcare science professionals.
* Prepare equipment, collect and process patient samples or data, perform basic tests or measurements, and maintain accurate records in line with departmental protocols.
* Organise electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS) clinics for outpatient and inpatient settings; prepare equipment and patients; ensure safety, infection control, and adherence to protocols.
* Coordinate patient appointments, liaise with clinical and support teams, and provide compassionate reassurance to patients and carers during procedures.
* Work collaboratively to ensure services meet changing healthcare needs and contribute to efficient use of resources and information management.
* Assist with administrative tasks such as scheduling, stock management, and data entry related to EMG/NCS clinics.
* Under supervision, participate in simple audit and contribute to quality improvement and development of national and local procedures/guidelines.
* Follow health and safety and quality assurance policies and promote equality, diversity, and rights for all.


Role Details

* Under the auspices of registered practitioners, support a complex and specialist Clinical Neurophysiology service across all ages and a range of medical conditions with sensitivity and adaptability.
* Prepare patients for EMG/NCS tests, including any special arrangements for needs (infection control) and ensuring suitability for testing.
* Input patient data into test equipment, operate software during tests, and assist with data transcription and reporting as required.
* Assist with patient comfort and care before, during, and after tests, and arrange urgent patients into booked clinics in coordination with consultants.
* Coordinate with porters and transport services for timely inpatient transfers and work with colleagues to meet changing healthcare needs.

* Ability to work with initiative, under supervision, and in a multidisciplinary team.
* Awareness of infection control, safety, and basic audit/quality improvement activities.


Physical, Mental, and Emotional Demands

* Physical tasks include assisting with patient preparation, lifting and moving equipment, and working in a warm environment; exposure to body fluids and challenging conditions may occur.
* Mental tasks involve accurate data handling, timely calculations, and adjusting equipment settings during tests.
* Emotional demands include supporting patients through distressing or life-changing diagnoses and dealing with distressed carers or relatives.
