We have two amazing Emergency Departments, Preston & Chorley, yet one amazing #TeamED vision – it’s exciting as staff may be asked to flex across both locations, learning loads of new skills along the way.

Main duties of the job

We asked people why they love working on ED and one of the biggest reasons was that our team are like a family – we all spend a lot of time at work, so it’s great to know this is how our team feel and it’s definitely our biggest strength.

We have a variety of departmental study days such as:

  • Triage process
  • Minor injury assessment & management
  • Resus training
  • Access to CPD funding at University level

  • Major trauma training
  • Insitu- sims – taking place on the shop floor

    You’ll work alongside Advanced Nurse Clinicians, Emergency Nurse Practitioners, Consultants, and Senior Healthcare Assistants who support us all the way. On starting you’re assigned a mentor to work alongside you for the first couple of weeks - we get lots of positive feedback about this.

    124,000 patients come through our doors yearly, 18,000 of these are children & 700 are major trauma patients as our Preston site is the Regional Major Trauma Centre for the North West. The very distinctive Air Ambulance helicopter can be seen flying in & out of Preston a few times a day – bringing people from across the region to be treated.

    Detailed job description and main responsibilities

    We are a forward thinking department with a real emphasis on staff development and training – we have our own clinical educator, who delivers up to date training across both sites for all your learning needs. Our Consultants and Senior Medical staff are on shift 24/7 at RPH but always there to support the team at CDH. The relationship between our medical and nursing staff is second to none.

    Qualifications and Education

    Essential criteria

  • Appropriate NMC Registration
  • Diploma in Nursing
  • 6 to 12mths experience post registration
  • NMC recognised Mentorship qualification or willingness to work towards following 18 months commencement in post
  • Desirable criteria

  • Degree
  • Knowledge and Experience

    Essential criteria

  • Recognition of a acutely unwell patient - aims course BLS /ILS
  • To be competent in medication administration
  • General knowledge of safeguarding
  • Time management and leadership skills
  • Awareness of changes within Nursing practice
  • Knowledge of Clinical Governance and the relevance to practice
  • Desirable criteria

  • Manchester triage trained
  • Level 1 competent in RCN standards
  • Trauma training
