R0221 Intern Graduate opportunity to start May 2025 (subject to successful vetting, medical and reference checks) Grade: 2, £25,713 – £26,196 Directly responsible to: Policy Manager Full time, 12-month fixed term contract Location: Office of the Police and Crime Commissioners in West Midlands Closing date for applications is 12 noon Friday 30 th January 2026, interviews to take place in person on Wednesday 11th February 2026. We are seeking a newly graduated intern with a specific interest in policy work to provide support and capacity to the Policy Team within our office. The role will be for a 12-month basis and the successful candidate will be expected to be able to work in the centre of Birmingham at least 2 days a week. This role will support policy agendas such as criminal justice or community safety and will have responsibility for implementing policy areas through partnership working, following up agreed actions and supporting meetings and events. The candidate will learn how to implement strategy and how to turn ideas into concrete policy, and will work with stakeholders at all levels. This role would suit an individual who has an interest in the work of the Police and Crime Commissioner and would use this opportunity to add capacity to our office, while gaining and developing valuable skills and experience in the public sector, working for a politician. The individual would have the opportunity to shadow the Commissioner, members of staff and understand and support some of our key priorities, and training will be provided where required. JOB DESCRIPTION Job title: Intern Grade: 2 Directly responsible to: Policy Manager Directly responsible for: N/A Location: Office of the West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner Job Purpose: To provide support and capacity to the Policy and Commissioning Team in respect of policy work deriving from the Police and Crime Plan. This is a politically restricted post. Main duties and responsibilities: Provide support to the Policy and Commissioning Team in respect of policy work being undertaken. Support the team to develop policy ideas, initiatives and translate policy into action by carrying out specified tasks Provide general clerical and administration support to the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner to include photocopying, filing of records, sending emails and administration of post and mail Engage with partners, respond to telephone and face to face enquiries and provide excellent customer service Maintain and operate efficient and effective record keeping and filing systems ensuring they are updated and stored appropriately Produce and maintain a wide range of documents, databases, presentations, spreadsheets etc. Arrange and service meetings, including minute and note taking Support the organisation of events for the OPCC including booking venues and providing reception services etc. Other responsibilities: Provide excellent customer service Forge and maintain effective working relationships with all colleagues in the OPCC and other organisations locally, regionally and nationally Attend events and forums at which the Commissioner or his team requires support/representation Take personal responsibility for personal and professional development and maximise own resources in a way with reflects the values of the OPCC Work closely with the other colleagues to improve operational practices and effectiveness Ensure compliance with all OPCC policies, procedures and practices Undertake projects/activities as required working across a range of functions within the OPCC Promote diversity and racial equality, ensuring that all activities and matters have proper regard for equality and diversity issues Undertake additional duties as are reasonably commensurate with the level of the post Person Specification Qualifications Degree or equivalent or experiential learning Post Graduate/Management qualification Project management training/qualification (e.g. PRINCE or similar) Knowledge and skills Knowledge of current issues facing the public sector and policing in particular, Ability to construct coherent arguments and articulate ideas clearly to a range of audiences, formally and informally using a variety of techniques Ability to prioritise and manage workloads and competing priorities and meet deadlines Excellent communication and presentation skills Excellent writing skills Ability to utilise a full range of standard office IT software/packages Knowledge of relevant legislation in particular the Police Reform and Social Responsibility Act 2011 Understand structures and functions of Police and Crime Commissioners Personal Qualities Proactive ‘self-starter’ Ability to seek out innovation and creative solutions Ability to work on own initiative Ability to work as part of a team to achieve objectives Political sensitivity and astuteness Promote diversity and racial equality Commitment to continuous professional development
