About The Role
Balfour Beatty Power T&D is looking to recruit an Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join our Power Commercial Team, supporting the Integrated Utilities Management Team (IUMT). The Assistant Quantity Surveyor will support the effective commercial management of projects under the guidance of a Quantity Surveyor or Senior Quantity Surveyor. The role offers structured exposure to cost management, contract administration, and procurement activities, supporting the successful delivery of projects in line with contractual, financial, and governance requirements. Working closely with senior commercial team members, the Assistant Quantity Surveyor will assist in the management of subcontractors and supply chain partners, contributing to the delivery of utilities and infrastructure works across a major infrastructure programme. This role provides an excellent opportunity to develop both technical and commercial capability, while progressing towards professional membership of RICS, ICES, or CIOB.
What you'll be doing
* Maintain awareness of Balfour Beatty governance requirements and support compliance with BMS and commercial procedures.
* Assist with the preparation of cost reports, forecasts, and budgets.
* Support interim valuations, payment applications, and cost value reconciliations (CVRs).
* Assist in tracking project costs, variations, and change control.
* Support the preparation and close‑out of final accounts.
* Support contract administration in accordance with the agreed form of contract (typically NEC3/NEC4).
* Help maintain accurate commercial records and cost data.
* Assist in monitoring compliance with contractual obligations and internal governance processes.
* Support subcontractor procurement, including tender enquiries, evaluations, and contract administration.
* Assist with subcontractor payments, variations, and performance monitoring.
* Help maintain effective working relationships with the supply chain.
* Identify potential commercial risks and opportunities and escalade as appropriate.
* Support the maintenance of risk registers and change logs.
* Contribute to regular commercial and financial reporting.
* Work collaboratively with project managers, engineers, procurement, and commercial colleagues.
* Support senior commercial staff with day‑to‑day commercial activities.
* Actively work towards professional development and chartership.
Who we're looking for
* An organised, innovative, and creative Assistant Quantity Surveyor with enthusiasm for gaining knowledge and experience of working on diverse projects and portfolios.
* Some experience within a construction or infrastructure environment.
* Basic understanding of commercial and cost management principles.
* Awareness of NEC contracts (NEC3/NEC4 desirable).
* Strong numerical, organisational, and analytical skills.
* Ability to manage workload and meet deadlines.
* Good communication and teamwork skills.
* Demonstration of resilience and determination to succeed (achievement focus).
* Proactively manage opportunities, risks, and threats.
