Responsibilities
* Provide a portering service to the Emergency Department, support patient transfers to wards, and carry out routine ad‑hoc duties, including department deliveries.
* Liaise with the nurse in charge of the emergency department and operational teams.
* Shift Pattern – 13 x 11.5‑hour shifts every four weeks. Shift times are 07:30‑20:00 and 11:30‑00:00.
* Escort and convey patients by wheelchair, bed or trolley.
* Transfer patients to wards, x‑rays, CT scans, ultrasound, MRI and endoscopy.
* Assist with patient movement using clinical manual‑handling procedures (pat slides and log‑rolling techniques), and use reasonable judgement when preparing to move a patient and checking with clinical staff if unsure.
* Transport and collect pathology specimens, containers and units of blood, ensuring records are logged and transported in accordance with safe handling techniques.
* Deliver and collect prescriptions from pharmacy and fetch blood from the blood bank.
* Assist in cardiac arrests, transport records to wards with patients on transfer and report any suspicious incidents.
* Support the nurse in charge and operational team where required.
* Attend mandatory training courses covering moving and handling, resuscitation, infection control, clinical governance, fire training, conflict training, pat slide training and log‑roll training.
* Operate a communications device to keep in touch with other staff in the department.
* Assist with pat slides and log rolls in the department, wards, CT and CYT.
