We are looking for ambitious and enthusiastic Band 7 Neonatal Nurses to join our friendly, dynamic, innovative and award winning team at Singleton level 3 NICU. Singleton NICU provides a full range of neonatal critical care services for South West Wales

The unit has excellent benchmarked outcomes and is recognised for high quality innovative practices, family integrated care, neurodevelopmental follow up programme. In addition, the unit has reaccreditation for BFI status.

We are seeking an individual with excellent managerial, leadership and staff organizational skills. We are looking for an individual who is able to motivate and develop a team with the ability to delegate and prioritize workload. We are seeking a highly motivated neonatal ward manager with the drive and commitment to developing neonatal services at the Singleton Hospital, Swansea. You must have exceptional communication and managerial skills.

To demonstrate a professional approach to work and act in accordance with the Swansea Bay Health Board personal responsibilities framework and the NMC Code of Professional Conduct at all times.

Main duties of the job

The Neonatal Ward Manager will provide clinical and operational leadership within the neonatal unit, ensuring the delivery of safe, high
quality family integrated care. The post holder is responsible for:
• The effective management of the nursing workforce, co ordinating staffing and resources, and supporting service development in
line with national standards and evidence based best practice.
• Being a visible leader and expert in neonatal nursing, acting as a role model for best practice, professional standards and
compassionate leadership. They will promote an inclusive environment for staff and families.
• An expert in neonatal nursing and will provide clinical guidance, support decision making and contribute to education, training and
mentorship of staff.
• Fostering a culture of learning and continuous improvement, ensuring governance, quality and patient safety frameworks are
embedded in everyday practice.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Planning & Organisation
• Supervise the professional and clinical work of nursing staff within the clinical area. Allocate workloads effectively, considering skill
and competency of staff and patient requirement.
• Provide day to day operational management of the neonatal unit, managing staffing and rota’s to ensure that ward has effective skill
mix and staffing levels to meet demand and allocating resources appropriately.

Improvement, Monitoring, Policy/Service Development
• Take responsibility for the environment of care, ensuring infection control policies and procedures in place and participate in relevant
monthly audit and act upon the results.
• Be responsible for the development of evidence-based policies, procedures and protocols for the ward/ unit ensuring that they meet
national, local and professional criteria, gaining SBUHB approval/ratification prior to use where appropriate.
• Ensure that the nursing team are kept up to date on current legislation and guidance re: information governance and challenge poor
practice as required

Clinical
• To be a highly competent, knowledgeable and visible practitioner within the speciality ensuring the provision of excellent evidencebased nursing care for babies and their families.
• Ensure that each neonate is assessed and that his or her care is planned, implemented and evaluated in negotiation with the family,
and that this is accurately documented.
• Act as a visible and accessible clinical leader, providing expert advice and support.
• Support on complex decision making.

• Develop and maintain the clinical skills and knowledge necessary to provide clinically effective, holistic, evidence-based nursing care.
This includes expanded role responsibilities, within the Scope of Professional Practice following appropriate training.
• Demonstrate extensive knowledge and skills in the management of the critically ill neonate and support staff to develop the
necessary skills and knowledge for their own practice.

Essential Qualifications & Knowledge

Essential criteria

1. Registered Nurse or Midwife - Active NMC Registration, QIS / ENB 405 Bachelor degree in relevant health related subject (or equivalent experience) accompanied by post registration/post graduate specialist training, experience and/or short courses
2. NHS Recognised management qualification or equivalent demonstrable experience.

4. Excellent communication skills (verbal/listening/written) able to demonstrate tact and diplomacy when working with others
5. Demonstratable Leadership skills ability to delegate and prioritise work

6. Welsh Language Skills are desirable levels 1 to 5 in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing in Welsh.
