Head Technician dBs Institute Bristol Contract Type: Permanent Salary: £29,000-£32,000 per year Hours: Full-time, 37.5 hours per week Location: Bristol The Head Technician leads the campus technical team, ensuring the smooth, safe, and creative operation of all facilities. Working closely with the Campus Management Team, teaching staff, and the Area Facilities Manager, you’ll help maintain high standards across studios, performance spaces, classrooms, and shared environments - supporting an excellent experience for students and staff alike. This hands-on role blends technical expertise with strong organisational and leadership skills. You’ll manage day-to-day technical operations, oversee facilities upkeep, and contribute to the development of new creative spaces. With new courses expanding beyond music technology into performance, songwriting, and event management from September 2026, it’s an exciting time to join the team and help shape the next phase of dBs Institute’s growth. Key Tasks and Responsibilities Work will be wide and varied, but the following provides an overview of the main expectations for this role: Team Management and Development Line manage and mentor the campus technical team, fostering a positive, accountable, and collaborative working culture. Create and manage staff rotas to ensure the campus is adequately supported at all times. Develop and maintain training materials and induction guides to ensure consistency and quality across campuses. Coordinate the Technician Trainee Programme, offering structured development opportunities for aspiring technical staff. Operational Excellence and Technical Support Support the delivery of teaching and assessment through technical setup, classroom assistance, and equipment management across music production, live sound, performance, and songwriting environments. Design and maintain equipment maintenance schedules, ensuring the team is trained and confident in testing, setup, and fault diagnosis across a range of studio, live, and performance technologies. Collaborate with Campus Management and teaching teams to prepare spaces and resources for new modules, subject areas, and performances. Provide first- and second-line IT and AV support within the campus, escalating issues where required. Assist in the development and setup of new creative spaces, including studios, rehearsal rooms, and performance areas. Manage local operational budgets for equipment spares and repairs, ensuring value for money and accurate record keeping. Facilities, Estates, and Health & Safety Oversight Work closely with the Area Facilities Manager and Head of Campus to help maintain the campus estate, addressing repairs, safety, and the general presentation of spaces. Ensure facilities are clean, organised, and safe, supporting a professional and welcoming environment for students and visitors. Monitor compliance with Health & Safety policies, including lone working, safe systems of work, and statutory testing, escalating issues as needed. Support the implementation of new operational processes or policy updates relating to estates, facilities, or safety management. Oversee site security provision and liaise with contractors where relevant. Support the creation, review, and communication of risk assessments relating to technical and facilities operations. Support the Area Facilities Manager in maintaining statutory compliance across the estate, including hosting contractors, coordinating alarm and system testing, and maintaining accurate records. Act as a Health & Safety advocate, actively promoting and driving a positive safety culture onsite, leading by example, and supporting the Area Facilities Manager and Health & Safety Manager in the implementation of safe working practices. Collaborative and Campus-Wide Contribution Work proactively with Campus Management and academic teams to align technical and facilities support with teaching, learning, student experience, and recruitment priorities. Contribute to campus-wide planning and coordination activities that enhance student experience and operational efficiency. Undertake any other reasonable duties appropriate to the role as required by the line manager or management team. Essential Skills and Experience Proven experience in a technical, facilities, or operational management role within a creative or educational environment. Strong understanding of music technology, live sound, and/or recording studio operations, with broad awareness of performance and vocal technologies. Knowledge of health and safety regulations, including risk assessment, equipment testing, and safe systems of work. Excellent communication skills, with experience of managing or mentoring staff. Proven ability to plan, prioritise, and deliver multiple projects within a dynamic, student-focused environment. Practical understanding of IT and AV systems Strong organisational skills with attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high presentation standards across facilities. Familiarity with MacOS and music production software Familiarity with Google Suite apps such as Drive, Sites, Docs and Sheets What we offer?
