Consultant General Ophthalmologist with a Specialist Interest in Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus

About the Role
We are seeking an innovative and dynamic consultant to join our expanding and well-equipped department. This position is suitable for Higher Trainees who have completed their training or an established consultant seeking a career change.
The role involves working full-time in a friendly team, with responsibilities including general and specialist clinics, cataract and glaucoma surgery. There is a 1 in 8 on-call commitment for general ophthalmology, and a separate sub-regional vitreoretinal on-call. Shared office space and secretarial support are provided.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide expert clinical opinions on a range of ophthalmic problems, both emergency and elective.
* Independently run operating lists and teach cataract surgery.
* Take full responsibility for patient care.
* Prioritize clinical needs effectively.
* Supervise multidisciplinary teams.
* Work according to NHS guidelines and group decisions.
* Demonstrate understanding of NHS structures, management, and current issues, including national strategic plans.
* Lead clinical teams and provide a high-quality specialist service.
Department Highlights
Our department offers a wide range of ophthalmic services, including vitreo-retinal surgery, medical retina, uveitis, lacrimal surgery, glaucoma, corneal services (PK, DALK, DSAEK, DMEK), paediatric services, adult motility, thyroid orbitopathy, oculoplastic surgeries, and cataract procedures.
We have a talented team of nurses, orthoptists, and optometrists trained across various ophthalmic specialties. Our surgical services operate from the purpose-built Eye Surgery Unit (ESU), with operating lists at Torbay Hospital, Newton Abbot, and Exeter. A new ophthalmic theatre is expected to be operational by January 2024.
