About The Role

For informal enquiries, please contact Patrick Unwin (Head of Department) p.r.unwin@warwick.ac.uk

We will consider applications for employment on a part-time or other flexible working basis, even where a position is advertised as full-time, unless there are operational or other objective reasons why it is not possible to do so.

The Warwick Centre for Experimental Fuel Technology (CEFT) is focused on fundamental science that will advance the development of innovative next generation fuel cell and battery technologies. We use a range of innovative techniques and workflows developed at Warwick and invent new methods. The Centre is an exciting venture bringing together leading research groups in the Department of Chemistry, Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) and the School of Engineering at the University of Warwick. With world-leading expertise and facilities in electrochemistry, materials chemistry, spectroscopy, microscopy, modelling and battery and fuel cell construction and testing, we aim to develop next generation electrochemical energy technologies through holistic views of fuel cells (especially ammonia fuel cells) and metal and metal ion (Li, Na, Ca etc.) batteries, from the nanoscale to device level. Other fuel cell and charge storage technologies can also be explored as part of the Centre.

This fellowship role provides an excellent opportunity to lead our efforts in energy storage (battery and supercapacitor science), by combining nanoscale electrochemistry, microscopy and imaging, and operando measurements. We shall take nanoscale understanding of charge storage through the length scales to inform the development of practical devices.

This is a great opportunity for an individual with imaginative ideas and aspirations to make a significant contribution to strategically important and growing area at the University of Warwick that will have global impact and visibility.

About You

You will be a highly motivated person with imaginative ideas, experience and achievements in cutting edge electrochemical science and the demonstrated ability to quickly become expert in leading instrumental methods. The following gives an idea of key techniques in which we are interested: electrochemical imaging (e.g. SECCM, SECM, EC-AFM, EC-STM), single entity electrochemistry and nanoelectrochemistry, hydrodynamic techniques, microscopy (e.g. electron microscopy, identical location TEM, AFM, SIMS, EBSD, etc.), glovebox electrochemistry, general electrochemical techniques (voltammetry, amperometry, impedance microscopy), operando and in-situ spectroscopy, COMSOL Multiphysics modelling (or similar) and MATLAB programming or similar (code development and data analysis routines).

You will have an excellent publication record, with high quality publications in general electrochemistry, electrochemical instrumentation, materials electrochemistry, and/or battery science.

You will have an excellent record of poster and talk presentations at national and international meetings.

You will be collegiate and able to demonstrate that you have worked effectively and collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.

You will have a PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant area of Chemistry, Physics or Materials Science (or be close to submitting your thesis).

If you have not yet been awarded your PhD but are near submission or have recently submitted your PhD, any offers of employment will be made as Research Assistant on level 5 of the University grade structure (£30,805)). Upon successful award of your PhD and evidence of this fact, you will be promoted to Research Fellow on the first point of the level 6 of the University grade structure (£35,116).

For further information regarding the skills required for this role please see the personal specification section of the attached job description.
