Highly Specialist Children's Occupational Therapist

We have an exciting opportunity for you to join the Brent Children's and Young People's Occupational Therapy Team. We are looking for a highly experienced Band 7 Occupational Therapist to work full time, part time/job share may be considered.

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic individual who has extensive clinical experience working with children.

Your role will be to provide assessment, advice, and treatment to children with a range of needs including coordination, developmental, functional, sensory and sensory motor needs either in 1:1 input, groups or integrated MDT groups. The role will include work within local clinic settings, schools and supporting families across Brent.


Main duties of the job

You will work closely with an established multi-professional teams within Brent Community Services and with outside services to deliver occupational therapy advice and treatment meeting the needs of children and young people across Brent including delivering EHCP treatment in line with The Children's Act 2014. You will have had experience of working with children in the community and/or educational settings or similar.

You should be able to evidence excellent team working and communication skills and have a passion for management and leadership. You will take a key role in ensuring best practice and develop clinical pathways to reflect.

You will receive support from a line manager and receive in house training as part of the role. There is a strong ethos of clinical support and supervision within the team.

Person Specification


Education/Qualification

* Diploma/Degree in Occupational Therapy
* Registration with the Health Professional Council
* Evidence of CPD in portfolio including attendance of specialist short courses relevant to children with special needs/ disability
* Training in Moving and Handling people with disabilities
* Masters level study or equivalent
* Advanced training up to Masters level equivalent in area of Paediatric Occupational Therapy e.g. sensory integration


Experience

* Extensive experience to of working with children:
* With complex needs
* Physical and learning disabilities
* An understanding of the national SEND agenda and implications for AHPs working with CYP with SEND
* Experience of working with CYP with SEND and following statutory guidelines such as completing EHCP requests
* Extensive skills and experience of Assessment, treatment and management of children with complex needs
* Extensive skills and experience of Managing own caseload
* Extensive skills and experience of Working with parents
* Extensive skills and experience of Writing clinical notes and reports
* Knowledge of a range of specialist equipment, seating systems including wheelchairs and assistive technology
* Experience in working collaboratively across agencies in planning care
* Experience in planning complex discharges, co-ordinating services and resources
* Experience of supervising/managing junior and assistant staff
* Rotational experience at Band 5 or Band 6 level in acute trusts and community services


Skills & Knowledge

* Able to lead a team
* Able to appraise staff
* Knowledge of philosophy and key issues within the profession
* Actively promotes OT services
* Skills in managing complex cases and advising other staff on management
* Knowledge of moving and handling legislation and procedures
* Skill in providing risk assessments and care plans in moving and handling
* Knowledge or range of assistive technology and its application
* Ability to establish good working relationships with clients and carers
* Ability to problem solve in a creative manner and to make clear and realistic decisions with clients and their carers
* Able to consider recommendations that deliver value for money
* Working knowledge of the roles of Other professionals in Health, Education and Social Care involved with CYP
* Working knowledge of the roles of Occupational Therapist in the Education system.
* Working knowledge of the roles of Understanding and application of standards of record keeping and reporting
* Working knowledge of the roles of National policies and procedures in particular safeguarding children, SEN and disability act, SEN reforms, Childrens and families act, National Service framework for children, the children's bill and foundation stage and National curriculum's.
* Working knowledge of the roles of Clinical governance/audit
* Participation in recent NHS Leadership training programme or similar

* Ability to undertake safe manual handling
