An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Brampton/Ely based Hydrometry & Telemetry Team as a Hydrometric Officer. This is a dynamic, predominantly field-based role with occasional office-based responsibilities. You’ll be working outdoors throughout the year, including in challenging weather conditions, so resilience and adaptability are key. Operating across Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, and parts of Norfolk, you’ll be responsible for collecting, validating, and delivering high-quality scientific data on rainfall, river flows and levels, and groundwater. This vital information supports both internal teams and external stakeholders in making informed environmental decisions.
Responsibilities
* Collecting hydrometric data from numerous sites across the area
* Conducting flow gauging at sites to support data validation and incident response
* Report on asset conditions, identifying issues that may affect the data quality
* Undertaking fieldwork and travelling to local offices and national meetings as required
You will also be expected to develop and maintain strong working relationships with other team members and support them to achieve team objectives.

Team & Role Context
The Hydrometry & Telemetry Team are part of the Monitoring Department within Local Operations. We manage the Environment Agency’s field telemetry equipment and hydrometric network. Our core responsibility is to ensure the accuracy, reliability, and integrity of the data we collect. This data underpins critical statutory functions, including flood forecasting and water resource management. Our goal is to deliver accurate, timely information that meets the needs of our customers.
Experience / Skills Required
Essential:
* Ability to work independently
* Good communication skills
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
* Comfortable working near and in water
* A full UK driving licence
Helpful but not essential:
* Experience in collecting and managing data
* Experience with environmental monitoring instrumentation, particularly in river and tidal settings
* An awareness of field-based health and safety
The ideal candidate will be naturally inquisitive, with a sharp eye for detail. Prior experience or knowledge of hydrometry and telemetry is advantageous but not essential. This is a field-based role and will require travel to remote sites across Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire using a badged fleet vehicle.
