Role Summary / Purpose
As a Solicitor in our Family Law team, you will take ownership of a varied caseload across all areas of family law. You will be working on privately funded matters, dealing with the full range of family legal issues, including divorce, financial remedy, children law, and related work. You will liaise directly with clients, attend court or other formal hearings, negotiate settlements, draft agreements, and ensure cases are progressed efficiently and with compassion.
You will work in our Swallowfield office (with free parking), with the flexibility to work from home one day per week. Strong organisational skills, good legal judgement, and excellent client care will be essential.
Key Responsibilities
* Manage a broad family law caseload including but not limited to: divorce / dissolution, separation, financial remedy work, private law children matters, and related ancillary reliefs
* Interview clients, take detailed instructions, advise on legal options, risks, and strategies
* Prepare and draft legal documents (petitions, statements, agreements, consent orders, etc.)
* Negotiate settlements with opposing parties or through mediation / collaborative processes
* Attend court hearings, tribunals or other formal legal forums as required
* Maintain and update case files, ensure deadlines are met, and keep clients informed of progress
* Liaise with external stakeholders (barristers, mediators, court staff, experts)
* Ensure compliance with all regulatory, ethical and professional obligations (SRA rules, confidentiality, etc.)
* Contribute to the improvement of internal processes, quality of service, and potential business development activities
Person Specification
Essential:
* Qualified Solicitor in England & Wales
* Between 1 and 5 years PQE in family law
* Experience across a range of family law work: divorce, financial remedy, private children work etc.
* Strong drafting, negotiation and advocacy skills
* Excellent communication skills with clients, colleagues, and other professionals
* Excellent organisational ability and ability to manage a caseload with competing deadlines
* High attention to detail and ability to maintain quality in pressured situations
* Empathetic, client-focused approach
Desirable:
* Experience in mediation or alternative dispute resolution
* Experience with legal aid work (if your firm does that) or awareness of eligibility and procedures
* Exposure to high net worth or complex finance cases (if relevant)
* Familiarity with case management / legal practice software systems
* Membership of relevant family law professional bodies or interest in continuing professional development in family law
