Charterhall Estate – Scottish Borders Charterhall Estate is seeking an experienced Live-in Stable Manager / Groom to oversee the day-to-day running of a traditional estate stable yard and livery business. This is a hands-on role for a responsible, energetic and proactive individual with a genuine passion for horses and their welfare. The successful candidate will be responsible for the management of the livery business, the care of estate horses and ponies, managing the yard and grazing areas, and supporting children with their riding. This is a live-in position with a 2-bedroom cottage provided on the estate. What We Offer Live-in accommodation (2-bedroom cottage on the estate) Competitive salary depending on experience Opportunity to manage and develop a traditional estate yard A varied role working with estate horses and livery clients Support from the wider estate maintenance and office team A beautiful rural working environment in the Scottish Borders Key Responsibilities Managing the day-to-day running of the stable yard, grazing and equestrian facilities Ensuring the highest standards of horse care, health and welfare Exercising, preparing and turning out horses and ponies Preparing horses for riding, lessons and hunting Supporting and encouraging children with their riding (schooling and hacking) Monitoring horses’ condition and liaising with vets, farriers and other specialists when required Treating minor wounds, administering medication and maintaining horse records Managing arena hire and bookings Developing and promoting the estate’s livery business to maximise occupancy Maintaining the yard, paddocks and facilities to a high standard Ensuring health and safety procedures are followed at all times Working closely with the estate owners, maintenance team and livery customers Essential Skills & Experience Strong experience in stable or yard management Confident handling and riding of fit horses and ponies Excellent knowledge of horse care, welfare and stable management High standards of turnout (plaiting, clipping etc.) Good communication and customer service skills Ability to work independently and as part of a team Physically fit and comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions Calm, patient and able to work under pressure Full UK driving licence and able to tow a trailer Desirable (but not essential) Riding instruction qualifications Paddock management or spraying certificates (PA1 / PA6) Yard maintenance or estate skills (strimming etc.) Experience handling livestock (e.g. sheep) Horsebox or HGV licence (over 3.5t) First Aid qualification Working Pattern This is a live-in role and will involve working flexible hours including weekends, depending on the needs of the yard and horses.
