There’s a distinctive, energising sense of excitement and possibility about Somerset Council, and it’s a uniquely rewarding place to be a senior leader. We’ve promised our residents that we will build a fairer, greener, resilient, more flourishing Somerset, that cares for the most vulnerable and listens to them. While (like many places) we face a number of big challenges, we also have a deeply positive culture of self-improvement, a healthy economic outlook, and great partnerships – plus of course the invaluable experience, expertise, assets, and networks of our five predecessor councils. So it’s a promise we’re looking forward to keeping.
Good housing and good health have never been more important in building flourishing communities. While we’re making excellent progress in a number of areas, there’s always more to do. Priority areas for this portfolio include building on our recent successful investment into Adult Social Care, developing a comprehensive strategic plan for housing, and capitalising on our excellent partner relationships. It’s great to be in a position where we can confidently look ahead to the medium and longer term, exploring the options for innovation, redesign and even better provision in the future.
