As part of the development of Border to Coast Pensions Partnership, and in light of the Government’s “LGPS: Fit for the Future” report, we will be responsible for the management of our Partner Funds’ extensive legacy private market investments. This includes investments across real estate, private equity, infrastructure, private credit, and diversified alternatives on a global basis. Legacy management will involve a regular review of manager reporting, interaction with underlying managers, identification and resolution of material issues, and reporting back to our Partner Funds.
Assistant Portfolio Manager – Legacy Private Markets Investments
We are currently looking for an Assistant Portfolio Manager to join our Legacy Alternatives function, supporting and assisting Portfolio Managers with the oversight and management of an extensive portfolio of legacy private market investments across real estate, private equity, infrastructure, private credit and a range of diversified alternatives, valued at c.£10bn.
This is a new function Border to Coast is establishing as it becomes responsible for these legacy assets in accordance with the Border to Coast Investment Policy, investment process, procedures and relevant legal or regulatory documentation.
The Assistant Portfolio Manager role provides an exceptional foundation for an aspiring Portfolio Manager to gain broad experience across an extensive range of alternative investments and within a fast growing environment.
We are interested in hearing from assistant or associate level Portfolio/Investment managers with generalist experience across a range of alternative asset classes and products and an interest in supporting on the oversight and management of a broad range of open and closed-ended investments (c.700 line items). In addition, this role would suit private market investment professionals who are keen to work within an environment that can offer a clear pathway for progression into private markets portfolio management.
In this role you will predominantly focus on investment due diligence as well as the following core activities:
* Supporting on the oversight and management of legacy private markets investment portfolios and existing Border to Coast investments in line with internal procedures and customer requirements.
* Assisting in the preparation and maintenance of extensive due diligence reports to support investment decision making and portfolio oversight using internal and external sources of data and research
* Preparation of detailed research to support investment decision making as directed
* Assist in management of legacy investment portfolios in line with internal procedures and customer requirements as directed.
* Oversight and monitoring of existing Border to Coast investments, in line with internal procedures as directed.
* Regular review of the performance, attribution, exposure and risk metrics of the sub-fund/portfolio
* Assisting with the oversight and production of quarterly and ad hoc reporting
* You will also develop strong relationships with external managers and other industry participants.
Educated to Degree level and with a suitable investment management qualification, you will have relevant experience of supporting Portfolio Managers with portfolio oversight and monitoring activities across a range of Alternative investments, conducting due diligence and assisting with the review of investment, operational and ESG factors feeding into investment decision making.
With a keen interest in and understanding of investment markets, long-term investment, and a commitment to responsible investment and sustainability, you will have experience of using investment management software, problem solving and decision-making capability and strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
Border to Coast
Border to Coast is the largest LGPS (Local Government Pension Scheme) pool in the UK. It is owned by 11 Local Government Pension Schemes (‘Partner Funds’). The Partner Funds represent 3,100 employers and over a million members.
The Partner Funds are Bedfordshire, Cumbria, Durham, East Riding, Lincolnshire, North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, Surrey, Teesside, Tyne and Wear and Warwickshire.
The Partner Funds have c.£64bn in investments, of which Border to Coast is responsible for managing £47.9bn (as of 31 March 2024). Border to Coast also provides support and advice on a further £8.2bn, primarily invested in index funds, which sit outside of the pool.
