The role of a Carpenter at Maintenance & Contracts involves more than just carpentry works. We are seeking an enthusiastic, skilled individual with experience in various carpentry tasks, including fence repairs, fencing installation (timber close board panels and featheredge boards), digging out for posts, and making gates on-site or in our joiner’s workshop. Experience with uPVC window repairs (such as replacing hinges and handles) is desirable, or a willingness to learn new skills. The role involves working as part of a busy responsive repairs team, undertaking tasks such as framework for new bath installations, replacing bath panels, kitchen unit repairs, worktop replacements, stair tread repairs, emergency boarding of properties, and internal/external door lock replacements. Holding a UK Locksmith Association certificate is preferred but not essential; training may be provided if needed for emergency access roles.
Working hours are 8:00 am – 4:30 pm Monday to Thursday with a one-hour lunch break, and 8:00 am – 3:30 pm on Friday with a 30-minute lunch. The base is at our main depot, Layard House, New Way, Ipswich IP2 0BX, with work on IBC housing stock across Ipswich postcodes IP1, IP2, IP3, or IP4. Jobs are allocated via a mobile tablet, and you will be responsible for completing tasks within specified timeframes, including emergency calls. You will record detailed notes during and after each job, typing into your handheld device. You will drive a council fleet vehicle, which may be diesel or electric, and it may need to stay overnight at the depot, requiring you to commute daily. The vehicle will be stocked with imprest stock, replenished as you allocate materials during jobs.
We seek an enthusiastic person willing to learn and understand the role of a craft operative carpenter. You should be qualified to City & Guilds standards or hold a relevant carpentry qualification. Punctuality, reliability, and professionalism are essential, along with good communication skills, patience, and the ability to work under pressure. Adherence to health and safety procedures is mandatory, and you should be able to work independently and as part of a team.
This is a full-time role, 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday. We offer a competitive salary, a career grade pension scheme, generous holiday entitlement starting at 26 days plus bank holidays, sick pay, subsidised parking, public transport discounts, free swimming and gym membership, cycle purchase scheme, professional development opportunities, flexible working, Employee Assistance Programme, and a supportive team environment.
