Overview

Pharmacist - Band 7 (part-time) at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. Closing date: 29 March 2026. Vacancies available at Lambeth Hospital on the Maudsley site, with modernisation plans and relocation to Douglas Bennett House.

Main duties of the job

* Deliver a comprehensive clinical pharmacy service to the Lambeth Home Treatment Team (LHTT) and Maudsley Hospital in line with Trust policies, procedures, and standards.
* Conduct medicines-related consultations with patients and carers; involve patients in treatment decisions; improve patient and carer satisfaction with information about medicines.
* Support the multidisciplinary LHTT and Maudsley inpatient and community mental health teams to use medicines safely and effectively; reduce medicines wastage through medicines optimisation and quality improvement programmes; provide medicines-related training.
* Act as a practice supervisor in the training and education of trainee pharmacists and junior pharmacists.
* Prescribe medicines to service users within competence and agreed management plans.
* Partake in the pharmacy on-call service (Emergency Duty Cover, bank holiday rotas) and a Saturday service at the Maudsley Hospital site.


About us

The pharmacy department provides dispensing services from the Maudsley, Lambeth, Bethlem Royal hospitals and Ladywell unit, and a clinical pharmacy service to 1,000 inpatients and 3,000 community patients. The Medicines Information Centre at the Maudsley is the national centre for information on psychotropics. The department produces the Maudsley Prescribing Guidelines and supports research in psychiatry.

The pharmacy is part of the Pharmaceutical Sciences Clinical Academic Group (PSCAG) with over 1,800 staff and students within King’s Health Partners, aiming to integrate work across partner organisations to improve practice, research, and education.


About the location

Lambeth Hospital is in south London, close to Brixton and Clapham areas, with transport links and parking; not located within the congestion charge zone.


Job responsibilities

Job Purpose: To deliver a comprehensive clinical pharmacy service to the Lambeth Home Treatment Team (LHTT) and Maudsley Hospital in line with Trust policies, procedures, and standards.

* Provide medicines-related consultations with patients and carers; involve patients in treatment decisions; improve information provided about medicines.
* Support multidisciplinary teams to use medicines safely and effectively; implement medicines optimisation and quality improvement programmes; provide medicines-related training.
* Prescribe medicines within scope of practice and in line with local policies, if qualified as an independent prescriber.
* Conduct on-call duties (Emergency Duty Cover) and Saturday service at Maudsley Hospital.
* Present information in an appropriate format for the audience; communicate about barriers to effective communication (e.g., learning disabilities, mental impairment, detained patients).
* Provide timely information to the appropriate individuals based on urgency.
* Prepare and deliver training for clinical staff on medicines-related issues; provide clinical supervision to a team of pharmacists.
* Support local implementation of Trust Medicines Management Policies and ensure medicines are handled safely.
* Record and report data on patient and service outcomes; identify and undertake project work to drive improvements.
* Participate in and develop quality improvement initiatives, audits, and medicines evaluation as required by the Chief Pharmacist.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* MPharm Degree or equivalent
* Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) with mandatory CPD
* Postgraduate certificate/diploma in mental health or pharmacy practice or equivalent
* Member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society or CMHP


Experience

* Relevant experience in patient-facing pharmacist roles
* Experience in audit, development of audit tools, data collection and collation
* Experience in NHS hospital pharmacy
* Experience in providing clinical mental health services
* Experience in education and training
* Experience in implementing new procedures


Knowledge / Skills

* Good written and verbal communication
* Interest in psychiatric pharmacy
* Empathy and understanding of medication issues in mental health
* Commitment to developing knowledge, skills and quality of work
* Good computer skills for spreadsheets, graphs and reports
* Good time management and ability to prioritise workload
* Ability to work with limited supervision and refer appropriately

Salary: £47,810 to £54,710 per annum pro rata plus HCAs (depends on location)
