Role Overview
The British Horseracing Authority is the governing and regulatory body for horse racing in Great Britain. It ensures high standards of welfare and integrity within the sport.
We have an exciting opportunity for a Veterinary Surgeon to join the Equine Medication Control and Anti-Doping team. This role involves regulatory and administrative responsibilities, working within the wider Equine Regulation, Safety and Welfare team, and closely with our Integrity department.
This position provides professional support and advice to internal teams and external stakeholders, maintaining a comprehensive testing and monitoring program to safeguard the integrity of British horseracing and the welfare of participants. The role is primarily office/home-based, with some race day attendance and out-of-competition testing.
Key Responsibilities
* Reporting and monitoring out-of-competition testing
* Preparing drug briefs and medication record reviews for investigations
* Organising international testing processes
* Managing results and samples, monitoring screening findings
* Handling department enquiries and administration
* Developing and delivering anti-doping education programs for owners, trainers, vets, and jockeys (long-term projects)
Candidate Requirements
Applicants should hold a veterinary degree with a minimum of 5 years’ experience, or equivalent qualification/experience. Experience in horseracing regulation or sports regulation is preferred but not essential. A strong interest and willingness to learn are encouraged.
Essential skills include proficiency in MS Office and electronic databases, ability to meet deadlines, meticulous attention to detail, and excellent organizational and communication skills. Discretion and the ability to work independently are crucial. Experience in designing or delivering education and training is a plus.
