Scale Technician


FLSA Status: Hourly
Department: Maintenance / Technical Services

Position Summary

The Scale Technician is responsible for inspecting, testing, calibrating, repairing, and maintaining industrial weighing systems ranging from light‑duty bench scales to heavy‑capacity floor and platform scales. This role requires strong mechanical and electrical aptitude, the ability to diagnose performance issues, and the skill to work with load cells, indicators, communication protocols, and peripheral devices. The technician ensures accurate and reliable scale performance to support production, quality, and regulatory requirements.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Inspection, Testing & Calibration

1. Inspect industrial scales for accuracy, wear, damage, or calibration drift.
2. Perform calibration procedures using certified test weights and calibration equipment.
3. Document calibration results, adjustments, and compliance findings.
4. Conduct functional tests on indicators, load cells, junction boxes, and wiring.

Troubleshooting & Repair

5. Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and electronic issues affecting scale performance.
6. Repair or replace load cells, wiring, connectors, junction boxes, and indicator components.
7. Troubleshoot communication issues between indicators and peripheral devices.
8. Resolve problems related to drifting readings, unstable measurements, or signal loss.
9. Perform mechanical adjustments to platforms, mounts, and scale structures.

Electrical & Communication Work

10. Wire and configure scale indicators using RS232, RS485, RS422, and 4–20 mA current loop protocols.
11. Install and connect remote displays, printers, PLC interfaces, and other peripherals.
12. Program indicators to control output signals, display formats, and communication strings.
13. Work with RF devices, remote controls, and wireless communication modules.

Tools & Technical Equipment

14. Use multimeters, load cell simulators, soldering irons, grinders, sanders, and hand tools.
15. Operate calibration equipment, test weights, and diagnostic tools.
16. Perform soldering, wiring, cutting, and mechanical adjustments as needed.

Documentation & Reporting

17. Complete detailed reports on calibration results, device condition, repairs, and testing procedures.
18. Maintain accurate records of service activities, parts used, and compliance requirements.
19. Follow established procedures for start‑up, shutdown, and verification checklists.

General Responsibilities

20. Maintain punctuality, reliability, and consistent attendance.
21. Follow all safety policies, including electrical safety and lockout/tagout procedures.
22. Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors or management.
23. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.

Qualifications

24. High school diploma or equivalent preferred (not required).
25. Basic computer skills for documentation and reporting.
26. Strong written communication skills for technical reporting.
27. Mechanical and electrical aptitude required.
28. Ability to troubleshoot wiring, sensors, and electronic components.
29. Ability to lift and maneuver equipment and test weights as needed.
30. Experience with industrial scales or instrumentation is a plus but not required.

Physical Demands

31. Lift and move heavy test weights and equipment.
32. Stand, walk, bend, kneel, and reach for extended periods.
33. Work around industrial equipment and in production environments.
34. Perform tasks requiring manual dexterity and fine motor skills.

Work Environment

Work is performed in industrial, production, and maintenance areas with exposure to noise, moving equipment, electrical components, and varying temperatures.

Schedule & Overtime

Day shift availability as listed; overtime, weekends, and extended hours may be required based on operational needs.
