Job Description

The Environment Agency is fully committed to hiring an inclusive workforce. We’re seeking a Fisheries Enforcement Officer to join us in the North East Area. This role is ideal for someone with experience in tackling crime, carrying out investigations, and submitting case files. Using an intelligence‑led enforcement approach, you will detect and deal with fisheries offences, protecting and enhancing fisheries habitats and stocks for current and future generations.

As a Fisheries Enforcement Officer, you will hold an authorisation under the Salmon & Freshwater Fisheries Act 1975 (SAFFA) and be empowered as a Constable to investigate fisheries offences. You will receive training in relevant legislation and be issued specialist equipment and PPE.

Core Responsibilities

* Conduct fisheries enforcement patrols on behalf of the Authority, working alongside the Police and other partners.
* Target, disrupt and take action against fisheries crime in the field.
* Respond to incidents on short notice, including unsocial hours, briefings and weekend work.
* Maintain accurate records and use computer‑based systems for data input and retrieval.
* Act as a crew member on board the Fisheries Enforcement boat when required.
* Undertake specialist surveillance training as required.

Qualifications & Experience

* Excellent verbal and written communication and organisational skills.
* Experience of conflict resolution techniques is desirable, but mandatory conflict‑resolution training must be passed, requiring a suitable level of physical fitness.
* Full UK driving licence and swimming ability are essential; boat‑handling experience or qualifications are desirable.
* A proven ability to complete tasks accurately with minimal supervision, independently or as part of a team.
* Prior boat work at sea is desirable.
* Knowledge of fisheries and environmental legislation is advantageous.

Working Conditions & Benefits

* Mostly field‑based role with required unsocial hours, short notice incidents and weekend shifts.
* Eligible for a salary uplift due to the need to work unsociable hours.
* Potential travel and overnight stays.
* Flexible working arrangements are welcomed.

We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds. The Environment Agency does not form part of HM Civil Service and therefore does not offer continuous service. Applicants may contact your local HR team if unsure of status.

Applicants or candidates who meet the minimum criteria are guaranteed an interview regardless of disability.
