An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, enthusiastic and committed practitioner to join the Royal Marsden Hospital Children's Safeguarding team, as a Band 8a Specialist Nurse for Safeguarding Children. This is a varied role, which includes, offering safeguarding supervision and support, delivering integrated Safeguarding training, undertaking audits, and as a tertiary centre working in partnership with multiple local authorities and partnerships. The post holder will work with a range of key professionals to contribute to the on-going development and delivery of services designed to protect children and young people from harm and promote their welfare through safeguarding processes requiring excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Main duties of the job

The Specialist Safeguarding Children’s Nurse will assist the Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children in leading on the application and delivery of the national and regional safeguarding agenda across the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust. This includes working to ensure the Trust meets its legislative and statutory requirements to safeguard children as set out in Working Together to Safeguard Children (2023), the Children Acts (1989 & 2004), the National Service Framework for Children, Young people, and Maternity Services (2004) and the Care Quality Commission Core Standard 7 (Safeguarding people who use services from abuse).


The post holder is responsible for providing a high level of expertise, professional leadership, advice, support, and expert guidance in respect of safeguarding children. The post holder will provide professional leadership and expert advice to all Divisions in the Trust.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

• To lead and support senior colleagues and teams on multi agency collaboration, in relation to complex holistic discharge planning.

• Be able to assess emergency situations and offer advice, direct or provide fast appropriate interventions accurately and promptly.

• Ensure effective, timely communication and information sharing both internally and externally which compliments multidisciplinary/interagency working.

• Provide highly specialist and complex advice to a wide range of professionals regarding child safeguarding, application of the mental capacity act and MARAC processes including to staff working in adult services.

• Act as an autonomous, registered practitioner, who is legally and professionally accountable for own unsupervised actions guided by the professional code of conduct and Trust guidelines and protocols.

• Take a strategic lead in the management and co-ordination of Child Death Reviews processes and data management /reporting in line with government legislation and Local Safeguarding Children Partnership guidance

• Support the development and completion of any action plans for the organization following a child safeguarding practice review / domestic homicide review.

• Undertake a key role in the safeguarding of children, including those of adult patients with children, providing safeguarding consultation, advice, and supervision to all trust staff.

• Promote a think family culture within the Royal Marsden NHS Trust

• Lead on providing one to one and group safeguarding children supervision to a defined group of staff, ensuring supervision is recorded. This includes developing and evaluating programmes of safeguarding children supervision.

• Support the development and implementation of trust policies and guidelines in line with National and local policy and guidance.

• Support the Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children and Named Professional for Safeguarding Adults on the implementation and evaluation of the Trust’s integrated safeguarding strategy and Safeguarding quality improvement programmes.

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. Registered Nurse/Registered Sick Children’s Nurse/Community Nursing (Health Visiting/School Nursing) or equivalent.
2. Possession of a relevant degree or demonstrate equivalent in experience and knowledge
3. Evidence of ongoing professional development.
4. Experience of delivering training.
5. Evidence of personal and professional development in safeguarding children and adults.

Desirable criteria

6. Teaching / Supervision qualification.

Experience

Essential criteria

7. Currently practicing in a safeguarding role or previous experience as a safeguarding practitioner with experience.
8. Clinical experience of managing complex child in need/ child protection cases.
9. Evidence of assessing risk and harm with a high level of analytical skills
10. Demonstrates professional curiosity and the ability to manage appropriate professional challenge in safeguarding work.
11. Demonstrable experience in writing reports, child protection conference through to court.
12. Experience of working with safeguarding policies and procedures.
13. Experience of delivering and receiving safeguarding supervision.
14. Experience of close liaison and working with multi– disciplinary team and multiagency staff.
15. Experience of assessing training needs, planning, and delivering multidisciplinary/multi-agency training.

Desirable criteria

16. Experience in producing Committee/Board reports and presenting to meetings.
17. Experience of clinical audit, evaluation, and action planning.
18. NSPCC or other accredited safeguarding children supervision training

Knowledge

Essential criteria

19. Knowledge of the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, Mental Capacity Act, Liberty of Protection Safeguards and associated health and social care legislation.
20. Knowledge of legal framework and of political and policy changes affecting Safeguarding Children and Young People including the Domestic Abuse Act
21. Knowledge of local and national guidance and research in relation to Safeguarding Children and Young People.
22. Knowledge of data protection and NHS code of confidentiality.
23. Awareness and understanding of the wider health and safety, clinical risk, and quality issues.

25. Evidence of managing clinical incidents and /or complaints.

Skills and Competencies

Essential criteria

26. Able to work on own initiative and under pressure, meet deadlines and prioritise effectively.
27. Demonstrates a good understanding of Legislation and National Guidelines that drive safeguarding children policy and practice.
28. Strong commitment to safeguarding, promoting welfare, and protecting children.
29. Excellent verbal and written, communication skills with attention to detail
30. Evidence of continued professional development.
31. Be able to demonstrate leadership and good interpersonal skills that motivates others.
32. Be able to sensitively guide and support staff working with issues related to Child Protection.
33. Ability to provide expert advice and support all members of the multidisciplinary team in understanding safeguarding children processes and escalate appropriately.
34. Ability to demonstrate high level of supervision skills.
35. Able to challenge poor practice and deal with conflict.
36. Standard keyboard skills, knowledge of IT packages such as excel, word and power point.
37. Ability to analyse, interpret extract data and generate reports.
38. Able to work within a multidisciplinary team.

At The Royal Marsden we have an immune compromised patient population who we must protect as much as we can against the flu virus. Each year, seasonal flu affects thousands of people in the UK. Occurring mainly in winter, it is an infectious respiratory disease capable of producing symptoms ranging from those similar to a common cold, through to very severe or even fatal disease.

The wellbeing of our staff and patients is of the upmost importance to us, and it is the expectation of The Royal Marsden that all patient-facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.
