Offer description

Salary: £47,389 - £58,225 FTE: 1 (35 hours/week) Term: Fixed Term (32 months) Closing Date: 30 September 2025 We are seeking to appoint a Research Fellow to join the University of Strathclyde as part of the NIHR Health Determinants Research Collaboration (HDRC) Glasgow, a major new initiative led by Glasgow City Council. This post offers an exciting opportunity for an experienced and independent researcher with expertise in grant writing, qualitative methods, and experience of mixed methods or quantitative approaches, alongside community engagement and public policy. The HDRC Glasgow represents a significant investment in embedding evidence-informed decision-making across the council’s work on health inequalities. The Research Fellow will play a central leadership role in advancing this vision, collaborating closely with colleagues in Glasgow City Council, academic partners, and community stakeholders. Based in the School of Social Sciences, within the Social Work and Social Policy subject area, the postholder will be affiliated with Strathclyde’s Centre for Health Policy and work under the academic leadership of Professor Shona Hilton. They will also be part of a thriving practitioner–academic network with shared expertise in health inequalities, participatory research methods, and the social determinants of health. The successful candidate will help shape the HDRC’s research, evaluation, and capacity-building portfolio. This includes co-designing tools, resources, and practices that enable evidence-informed and equitable policy and service delivery. The role offers a unique opportunity to influence applied public health research embedded within a city governance context. Applicants should hold a PhD (or equivalent experience) and demonstrate success in grant applications, research outputs, and leading research or engagement activities that span academic, policy, and public audiences. The postholder will be expected to publish, secure funding, lead co-produced engagement activities, supervise students, and contribute to teaching and knowledge exchange. We particularly welcome applications from candidates with experience in interdisciplinary research, local government collaboration, or participatory approaches to influencing policy and practice. Skills in designing capacity-building initiatives are also desirable. Candidates will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to listen, engage, persuade, and present complex ideas clearly. Membership of relevant professional or chartered bodies, including the Higher Education Academy, is desirable but not essential. Formal interviews for this post will be held on Wednesday, 8 October 2025. Informal enquiries about the post can be directed to Prof. Shona Hilton, Professor (shona.hilton@ strath.ac.uk).
