Medical Laboratory Assistant, Specimen Reception
Collect incoming deliveries from pathology reception, unpack, label gynaecological specimens, perform specimen data entry using the Enterprise Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), work to hourly productivity targets, assist in the HPV sorting room, and support other tasks such as locating request forms and data entry for the rejects team.
Responsibilities
* Receive and check samples and request forms entering the laboratory.
* Number samples and forms with a unique identifier and place specimen containers in processing racks.
* Separate samples received in error for different departments when necessary.
* Enter patient details onto the Enterprise LIMS and look up/print previous patient history on the CSMS system.
* Liaise with users regarding errors in patient and specimen identification, return samples to the sender when appropriate, and record errors.
* Maintain a high standard of work, check specimen and request details, and report any non‑conformity to senior staff.
* Comply with Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services health and safety procedures, laboratory codes of practice, and Trust departmental policies.
* Follow laboratory procedures as detailed in departmental standard operating procedures (SOPs).
* Assist in training new starters.
* Assist in the HPV sorting room: check and sort request forms by recalls, pull out histories, match request forms and slides, and scan documents into the DART database.
* Perform other tasks such as locating request forms for investigations and doing data entry for the rejects team.
* Carry out duties within the Cytology Department as required by the Laboratory Manager.
Qualifications
Essential
* GCSEs in Maths & English or NVQ Level 2.
* Comfortable working as part of a team in an administrative job role.
Desirable
* Willingness to undergo training to gain relevant knowledge & skills for the role.
* Multi‑tasking & prioritising skills.
* Ability to work to targets and be well‑organised/flexible.
* Good computer skills, coordination & dexterity.
* Team player, good communicator & motivated.
* Ability to maintain good working relationships with all members of staff.
