Senior Associate Director HV Cable System Design Engineer
Jacobs is playing a leading role in the global energy transition. As our UK and Continental Europe team continues to expand, we are seeking a Principal Cable System Engineer to support a range of high‑profile projects across our Power & Energy portfolio. This includes high‑voltage AIS and GIS substations, transmission system assets, HVDC interconnectors, and energy storage systems.
Responsibilities
* Develop HV/EHV cabling system specifications, concept/detailed design, design review, estimation, site supervision and support as required.
* Provide technical support to the team on all aspects of HV cable system engineering and design.
* Prepare plant and equipment technical specifications, power cable route specifications, tender specifications, technical and progress reports.
* Ensure correct and accurate interface with other engineering functions; attend and conduct internal and external meetings with colleagues, clients, and subcontractors.
* Perform technical calculations including cable size, rating calculations, TMF and EMF calculations, sheath‑induced voltage calculations and others.
* Perform design reviews, verification of design.
* Ensure all project designs are compliant with CDM regulations, relevant legislation and company procedures.
* Assist with temporary works design schemes.
* Maintain good working relations with client, designer, team and supply chain.
* Ensure drawings and specification documents contain sufficient, accurate information for construction; formally request missing information promptly.
* Ensure inspection and test plans are completed as required by the PMP/specification, including dimension accuracy and quality checks.
* Support factory inspection tests (FAT).
* Establish and promote best practice in health, safety and environmental matters in conjunction with the SHQE department.
* Advise engineers on setting‑out methods and techniques.
* Prepare written risk assessments and method statements for the control of the works.
Qualifications
* Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Power Engineering.
* Previous experience with consultancy, contractor or utility in the energy sector.
* Extensive experience in a cable‑related role supporting FEED design and/or detailed design.
* Able to manage and lead HV/EHV cable designs at all project stages.
* Experienced user of CYMCAP to support cable system design.
* Experience working at EHV transmission voltages.
* Experience designing HV and EHV cable systems for both HVAC and HVDC systems.
* Familiarity with National Grid and DNO standards and processes.
