Job Title: Automation & Controls Engineer (50/50 office and field-based) Location: Leeds, Yorkshire (50/50 office and field-based) Salary: £43,000 – £52,000 overtime & on-call uplift company van flextime Job Type: Permanent The Role Are you an Automation & Controls Engineer who thrives on variety and problem-solving? This role offers the opportunity to work across multiple industries, tackling complex challenges that keep production lines running smoothly and critical systems operational. This isn’t a corporate tick-box job. You’ll be working as part of a tight-knit engineering team, tackling everything from troubleshooting live systems to delivering complete automation projects With the business recently expanding its 24/7 service contracts, the work is fast-paced, critical, and hugely rewarding. What You’ll Be Doing Fault finding and problem solving – diagnosing issues across electrical hardware, PLC software, HMIs, and control systems, often on live customer sites where quick thinking matters. Customer support & service delivery – providing breakdown response and ongoing technical support to clients in food, utilities, manufacturing, and other fast-moving sectors. Designing and building solutions – from electrical schematics and control panel layouts to PLC programming, SCADA configuration, and software testing. Commissioning automation projects – taking systems from concept to operational handover, ensuring smooth integration with existing equipment. Working across environments – splitting your time between field service, hands-on panel/shop-floor work, and office-based design and documentation. Collaborating within a close-knit team – sharing knowledge, mentoring where appropriate, and contributing to a culture of practical, solutions-driven engineering. What We’re Looking For If you are an automation engineer who thrives on solving complex problems—whether fault-finding on live systems or delivering bespoke automation projects—and are hands-on, adaptable, and comfortable balancing site work, panel/build tasks, and office-based design in a fast-moving environment, this role could be a great fit for you. 3 years’ experience in automation/controls engineering HNC or higher in Electrical/Electronic Engineering (or equivalent) Strong problem-solving mindset and hands-on approach Comfortable working in a mix of field and office environments 18th Edition Certificate (Desirable) Benefits Time Off: 25 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays.
