Under the supervision of a class teacher, the role typically involves working with pupils who have special educational needs, learning difficulties, disabilities, or exhibit occasional behavioural problems. This may include supporting pupils with high learning abilities ('gifted/talented').
Key Responsibilities:
1. Develop and apply knowledge of pupils’ learning needs to provide appropriate support.
2. Support pupils with literacy and numeracy tasks, including clarifying instructions.
3. Assist pupils in using ICT and other equipment to enhance learning.
4. Motivate and encourage pupils to focus and become independent learners.
5. Support, care, and supervise pupils within and outside the classroom.
6. Provide support for pupils’ personal needs to ensure a safe learning environment, including personal care such as toileting, eating, and mobility assistance.
7. Work with pupil groups to promote acceptance and inclusion of pupils with special educational needs.
8. Assist in preparing for educational visits and supervise students during off-site activities when appropriate.
9. Attend and contribute to staff meetings and in-service training within or outside contracted hours.
10. Supervise pupils during assessments and tests as directed.
11. Supervise pupils in cloakrooms, showers, toilet facilities, playgrounds, and during transportation.
12. Follow school procedures and report concerns to the Headteacher, especially regarding health and safety.
13. Adhere to school policies and procedures as appropriate.
