The role

The purpose of this role is to provide expert clinical practice as a Clinical Nurse Specialist, using advanced specialist knowledge to support clinical decision‑making and independent management of patients preparing to travel internationally. The post holder will carry out complex clinical assessments, apply high‑level decision‑making skills, and exercise sound clinical judgment to develop appropriate vaccination and treatment plans. In addition, the post holder will offer specialist advice and guidance to clients, support safe and informed choices when travelling to countries requiring additional vaccinations or travel‑related medications, and provide expert support to healthcare professionals, clients, and their families. The role also involves contributing to the ongoing development of the service, working collaboratively across healthcare boundaries to enhance practice and support the implementation and evaluation of evidence‑based standards, guidelines, and policies.


Duration, Location, and Working Pattern

* The location for this post is the Parkview Resource Centre.
* The shift pattern is Monday to Friday, 08:30 – 16:30.


Key responsibilities

* Provide specialist travel advice and undertake full travel health consultations and risk assessment/monitoring.
* Administer and manage NHS Travel vaccines in line with Patient Group Directive and Best Practice Guidelines, or prescribe as required for the specialist role and in line with prescribing competence.
* Provide clinical leadership in the management of the Travel Service, offering mentoring, supervision, and clinical advice to the multidisciplinary team.
* Develop effective partnerships and positive working relationships with internal and external agencies to support seamless care provision.
* Participate in the appraisal process and Personal Development Plan Review in line with the Knowledge and Skills Framework; support management of performance issues for the area of responsibility and provide and participate in clinical and peer supervision.
* Develop local procedures and protocols, ensuring compliance with national legislation and NHSGGC policies, and identify opportunities for continuous service development.
* Support NHSGGC values of quality, teamwork, care and compassion, dignity and respect, and openness, honesty and responsibility through appropriate behaviours and attitudes.
* Provide specialist advice and teaching to the multidisciplinary team; collaborate with education providers and key stakeholders to ensure staff competency is achieved and maintained.


Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job

* First‑level Registered Nurse with current NMC Registration and Revalidation.
* Evidence of significant post‑registration professional practice travel experience.
* Evidence of TREC course completion or equivalent (Desired but not essential).
* Evidence of delegation and support to skill‑mix teams.
* Effective listening and interpersonal skills.
* Time‑management skills/ability to prioritise workload.
* Competence in standard IT packages such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
* Prescribing experience relevant to the specialist role (e.g., nurse prescribing v100/v150 or independent supplementary prescribing v300) (Desired but not essential).
* Diploma in Travel Medicine or equivalent (Desired but not essential).
