Job summary
An opportunity has arisen to join Belvedere Ward at Franklyn Hospital as a Clinical Practice Lead, working alongside the staff team to support practice standards and patient and carer experience. The Practice Lead role will work alongside the Ward Manager and specifically concentrate on quality and clinical / professional issues relating to patient care and support.
Main duties of the job
To assist the Ward Manager in overseeing standards of care, maintaining practice standards, promoting change and developing nursing practice and audit.
To ensure the delivery of high standards of nursing care to all service users in accordance with evidence based professional practice and Trust policies.

Communication and Working Relationship Skills
* To have excellent written and verbal communication skills. To relay detailed confident verbal information on behalf of the ward manager and other professionals for the benefit of patients and their families.
* The post holder is expected to maintain effective communication with members of the multi-disciplinary team and other agencies as appropriate.
* To organise and maintain regular staff meetings and participate in nursing or multi-disciplinary meetings or discussions as required.
* To work in partnership with all health and social care professionals. To maintain effective communication that benefits the wellbeing of patients and their families.
* To discuss and monitor programmes of clinical improvement and audit with the ward manager and other staff.
* To be confident in managing team conflict when required.
* To be able to receive information, analyse and formulate professional judgements.

Responsibility for Patient care, Treatment and Therapy
* To work alongside the Ward Manager to ensure that standards of care are met and maintained to the highest level.
* To ensure that care plans are implemented and reviewed as part of ongoing assessment. To ensure that up to date risk assessments are carried out by relevant staff.

Responsibility for Policy and Service Development Implementation
* To assist in education and training programmes for junior staff.

* To be responsible for the ongoing practice development for the ward while working within current guidance.
* To uphold practice relating to implementation of quality improvement initiatives.
* To take an active role in auditing the service and other initiatives on the ward.
* To be able to identify positive learning outcomes from complaints and safeguarding concerns to identify future learning needs.
Responsibility for Human Resources
* The post holder will support the Ward Manager in the delivery of line management and leadership skills to the team.
* The post holder will primarily be a clinical leader and will be visible in this role.
* To allocate, supervise and monitor work given to junior staff.
* To lead and develop team members in ensuring the smooth running of the ward.
* To promote a learning environment for the benefit of all staff and students.
* To assist in the induction of new staff and learners.
Responsibility for Information Resources and Administrative Duties
* To ensure patient records are up to date and an accurate reflection of the situation.
* To ensure the requirements of the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act are observed.
Responsibility for Research and Development
* To assist in audit and research and development as appropriate to the clinical area.
* To participate in Quality Improvement work on the ward and to promote this so that it becomes part of normal practice.
Person Specification
Experience: Essential – Substantial post registration experience; Experience as a band 5 in an acute inpatient setting; Experience of working within a MDT; Ability to cope with stress and a challenging environment. Desirable – Knowledge of audit and quality improvement work; Experience of managing staff.
Knowledge and skills: Essential – A good understanding of Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act / DoLs.
Qualifications: Essential – Registered Nurse. RMN, RGN or RN(LD).
Physical Skills: Essential – To be able to undertake nursing procedures e.g. manual handling, physical challenging behaviour.
Analytical and Judgement Skills: Essential – Ability to work across a range of different agencies with varying organisational structures; A problem solving approach to professional practice; Compassionate leadership; Ability to take on new concepts; Excellent report writing and presentation skills. Desirable – Determination, a questioning attitude, enthusiasm and ability to work under pressure.
Planning and Organisational Skills: Essential – To work as a team to provide a high quality and effective service; Good liaison skills and ability to manage difficult and complex situations; To be able to motivate others and enable them to manage change; To provide stability and inspire confidence in others.
Communication and Working Relationship Skills: Essential – Excellent verbal and written communication skills; Basic computer skills; Ability to provide and receive complex and/or sensitive information; Proficiency in interacting and negotiating with colleagues.
