Overview
The post-holder will provide a comprehensive oesophagogastric, bariatric and general surgery practice, with opportunities to contribute to diagnostic and interventional endoscopy and, for the appropriate candidate, to the oesophagogastric cancer service.
Main duties of the job
Applicants should hold a Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons or equivalent and be on the Specialist Register or within six months of admission to the Register for trainees in the UK, or have references authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director. The successful candidate should have established skills in general surgery, diagnostic endoscopy, complex hiatal surgery and bariatric surgery. Competence in oesophagogastric cancer surgery is desirable; additional support will be available as required. Excellent communication, team working, teaching, and service development skills are essential.

Job responsibilities
Locum appointment for a Consultant Surgeon with a specialist interest in Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery, based at St James's University Hospital. The post joins an established Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery team of six consultants (four full-time, two part-time) providing benign and malignant Upper Gastrointestinal services, performing approximately 80‑100 oesophagogastric resections per year. The unit offers a broad spectrum of surgical approaches, including open, minimally invasive and robotic techniques, a Tier 4 bariatric programme and a range of primary and revisional hiatal surgeries. The appointee will participate in a 1:10 on‑call rota alongside other Upper Gastrointestinal and Pancreaticobiliary Surgeons, providing sub‑specialist support to the Emergency General Surgery service during normal hours and general surgical cover outside these hours.
