Birkett Civil Engineering is looking for a driven, hands‑on Construction Labourer/Groundworker to join our growing site team in Windermere. We have a small dedicated team therefore we are keen to find the right person who can become an integral and valued team member.
In this role, you'll support day‑to‑day construction operations, helping maintain safe work areas, moving materials efficiently, and assisting with tasks that keep the project running smoothly. We're looking for someone proactive, physically capable, and confident working under their own initiative—someone who takes pride in contributing to a safe, productive, high‑quality site environment.
If you want to be part of a team delivering standout projects in the Lakes and beyond, this is a great place to start. The role will initially be in Windermere however there is potential to work across other areas although primarily based in Cumbria.
Responsibilities
* Assist tradespeople and site supervisors with general construction tasks
* Load, unload, and move materials, tools, and equipment around the site
* Prepare and clean work areas, including debris removal and basic site housekeeping
* Operate basic hand tools and small/large plant
* Follow instructions from site managers and contribute to safety of the site
* Support groundworks, concrete placement, demolition, or other site activities as required
* Support steelwork fabrication & erection
* Comply with all health, safety, and environmental procedures
* Report hazards, near misses, or unsafe conditions promptly
* Maintain good communication with the site team and contribute to a positive work environment
Skills & Qualifications
* Previous construction or labouring experience preferred but not essential
* CSCS or CPCS card (or willingness to obtain one)
* Ability to perform physically demanding tasks and work in varying weather conditions
* Basic understanding of site safety practices
* Strong work ethic, punctuality, and willingness to learn
* Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team
* Valid tickets or willingness to gain tickets would be advantageous but not essential:
* Ground works
* 360 excavator
* Dumper
* Roller
