About us

The UCL History of Art Department is seeking to appoint a part-time Associate Lecturer (Teaching) in the Conservation of Contemporary Art & Media to cover the maternity leave of a member of academic staff from 1 January 2026 for 12 months. The position is offered at 0.2FTE (equivalent to one day per week).

Based at the UCL East campus in Stratford, the postholder will teach on the MSc Conservation of Contemporary Art & Media. This innovative programme extends the Department’s teaching and research strengths while providing for the rapidly developing training needs of the next generation of conservators, and conservation professionals looking to develop a specialism in the field of contemporary art. The focus of the programme is on contemporary sculpture, installation art, complex mixed media works and time‑based media works of art and contemporary design.

The MSc has two dedicated spaces in the Marshgate Building at UCL East; an objects conservation laboratory supported by a part‑time lab manager who is a conservation scientist and a media conservation studio supported by a part‑time studio manager. The MSc Conservation of Contemporary Art & Media forms part of the School for the Creative and Cultural Industries group of programmes, which is designed to enable collaborative approaches and experimental practice across Faculties, as well as with neighbouring institutions at the Olympic Park, including the Victoria and Albert Museum.

About the role

The postholder will offer teaching focused on contemporary materials, and the examination, analysis and conservation of contemporary sculpture and design objects. The postholder will be asked to support students practical projects in the Conservation Laboratory involving sculpture and modern materials. They will support the practical work for dissertations that focus on sculpture, installation and contemporary design, and will co‑teach a module on the Conservation of Contemporary Materials in the summer term. In the Autumn they will teach a module on Science of Contemporary Materials, which explores materials commonly used by contemporary artists.
