The job itself

Hours of work

4 Hours per week term time and 8 hours during the school holidays, with flexible hours to be discussed with the family for the right applicants. We are looking for a mixture of home care and taking him out.

About the recipient

The individual is male, 6 years old and resides in Driffield. They require a dedicated and suitable person to support them due to being non-verbal with a diagnosis of Autism, GDD and high sensory needs.

He enjoys being outside in nature and within open spaces where he can run and play. He enjoys play parks and outdoor areas as it allows him to meet his sensory needs such as spinning items, swinging and spinning around. He also enjoys being out walking in his pushchair. Swimming and other forms of water play is also a large part of his life.

This young person can display some challenging behaviours at times when he becomes unsettled or unable to communicate his needs. This can also be directed to adults around them at times. He also shows his emotions through stimming, smiling, laughing or becoming unsettled and changing his vocal tones. This young person also requires support with continence care, personal care and some encouragement with food and drinks.

We are looking for people who can build a positive relationship with this little boy and the family and become part of his lifestyle, getting to know him and how he communicates, and understanding his behaviours and needs. To look after and support him both at home and in the community. Driving is not essential, though desirable.

About the role

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Encouraging the recipient to engage in activities.
  • Helping to improve their social skills.
  • Settling and supporting the individual.
  • Looking after him in his home environment when family are out.
  • Keeping them safe in the community.
  • Helping them understand their surroundings.
  • Taking him for walks in his pushchair or out for car rides.
  • Taking him to the park.
  • Helping to fulfil their potential and aspirations.
  • Attending/transporting the individual to social activities and appointments.
  • Encouraging social interaction and inclusion and providing emotional support.
  • Assistance with food and drinks
  • Assistance with Personal care when required.
  • About the candidate

    The suitable candidate must:

  • Be motivated, proactive and able to work on their own initiative.
  • Be patient, caring and understanding.
  • Must be willing to work with some challenging behaviours
  • Have good communication skills (clear and effective communication).
  • Be able to build a positive relationship with the individual to both encourage and support them.
  • Have previous experience supporting an individual with additional needs.
  • Be comfortable with delivering personal care with changing pull-ups and clothes when necessary.
  • Be flexible to accommodate the hours of work where necessary.
  • DBS/Reference checks will be required for this post – Cost to be met by the local authority.
