Microscopy Technician (SEM and AFM focused)

We’re building the future of quantum computing here in the UK, and we’re looking for a Microscopy Technician to help us unlock better device performance and accelerate our R&D ambitions. You’ll be joining a collaborative, fast-paced team where your work will directly support the optimisation of our devices and processes, enabling breakthroughs in quantum computing.

As a skilled experimentalist, likely from a nanotechnology, physics, material science, or engineering background - You know how to operate advanced characterisation tools like AFM, SEM and EDX, and develop reliable methods. You are able to translate complex technical data into clear, actionable insights. As someone who thrives in a hands-on lab environment, you are meticulous with detail, and always look for ways to improve workflows and efficiency.

You’ll play a key role in our Materials Science & Device Engineering (MSDE) team – working alongside material scientists, fabrication engineers and quantum engineers – to ensure our characterisation tools work to the best of their abilities as the data informs critical decisions. Reporting to Kowsar Shahbazi the Senior Material Scientist, you’ll be:

* Development and optimisation of characterization methods mainly using AFM, SEM and EDX, to achieve accurate, repeatable and reliable measurements
* Prepare samples (cleaning, coating, etc)
* Develop automated methods for measurement and analysis, Identify opportunities to improve the capabilities of the current tools and processes
* Collaborate closely with internal team members on qualitative and quantitative investigation of samples of interest and provide detailed feedback for them to be able to optimise their devices/processes
* Present detailed technical reports related to the characterization of different devices,
* Work with the processing and facilities manager to maintain above tools and the related operational supplies for them, keep tool tracking and logs up-to-date, and organise record of tool service and troubleshooting, record supply inventory
* Provide user training and demonstrations, write SOPs and user guides as needed,
* Adhere to lab SOPs and safety standards and find ways of improvement for protocols.

A high level of handson experience with AFM, SEM and EDX is essential, if you worked alongside scientists and engineersto improve processes or done defect analysis even better you’ll already understand how to navigate technical settings and communicate clearly across a multitude of technical disciplines. A BSc or MSc in Materials Science, Physics, Nanotechnology, Engineering (or equivalent practical experience) is required. Formal training in atomic force or electron microscopy or x-ray spectroscopy is desirable.

You’ll bring sharp technical skills, attention to detail, and a proactive, problem-solving mindset, along with the ability to train others and clearly present technical results. This role goes far beyond running tools – it’s about influencing how we collect and use data to shape the next generation of quantum devices.
