The job itself

About the recipient

Applicants required to work with a 5-year-old boy with Autism. This individual is non-verbal and will lead by hand to items he wants.

They enjoy going to the local park in their pram and will often take their favoured teddy who provides great comfort to them. They also are big fans of going to local soft play and on warmer days the beach.

Applicants will have to be very clear in their instructions and be very patient as this individual can struggle with new places or ending favoured activities. They also struggle with the word no so applicants will need to be creative in how they approach situations. He also has a limited diet.

Applicants should have experience of working with SEN, driving is also preferred due to location. Applicants will need to be patient and compassionate and consistent due to this young person needing to know what is going on. Applicants will need to be comfortable with delivering personal care due to the young persons needs. The work will be for 3 hours a week and will consist of mainly weekend work and weekdays in the holiday.

About the role

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

1. Encouraging the recipient to engage in activities.
2. Helping to improve their social skills.
3. Settling and supporting the individual.
4. Keeping them safe in the community.
5. Helping to fulfil their potential and aspirations.
6. Attending/transporting the individual to social activities and appointments.
7. Encouraging social interaction and inclusion and providing emotional support.

The suitable candidate must:

8. Be conscientious and committed to providing support as necessary for the child.
9. Be patient, caring and understanding.
10. Be able to build a positive relationship with the child to both encourage and support them.
11. Be flexible to meet the needs of the family.
12. Have knowledge of working with or supporting a child with special needs.
