Main duties of the job

The Patch Associate GP Dean will assist and work with the Primary Care Dean and the Heads of School for General Practice to ensure the delivery of safe and compassionate care to patients through the delivery of high-quality GP specialty training.

The postholder will have local responsibility for the co-ordination, provision and management of postgraduate general practice training activities within the BNSSG GP training programme geographical footprint.

The role may expand in the future and may also involve some wider regional work.

This role is for 5 PA / 20 hours per week, and will involve overseeing placement and recruitment issues, developing wider placements and capacity to support GP expansion.

This role will also include an additional portfolio responsibility for the SW liaising with foundation school/programme.

The AD role includes formulating strategy, managing and overseeing local education budgets and leadership activities within the School of Primary Care as well as line management of TPDs.

This role will also include important work with our Educational and Clinical Supervisors to support and help them provide good quality supervision and education for trainees.

In addition, the postholder will have responsibilities with respect to the wider primary care workforce, supporting the development of the Primary Care workforce in BNSSG.

As an Associate Dean you will be part of the extended Senior GP educator team and will also be expected to be part of the approval process for Trainers and Practices within the Southwest and supporting delivery of both central and local ARCP panels.

You will work closely with the Head of Schools other Associate Deans, Training Programme Directors, Patch administrators/managers and Directors of Medical Education and the Primary Care Dean.

It will involve delivery and oversight of projects and workstreams to support doctors in training and educators, including induction, one-to-one support, small group work, and being an escalation point for both educators and DiTs.

Secondments: Applicants from within the NHS will be offered on a secondment basis only; agreement should be obtained from their employer prior to submitting the application.

Qualifications and Training

* Registered General Practioner on the performers list with GMC licence to practice
* Evidence of professional development as an educator/leader
* Higher educational qualification such as a postgraduate certificate or Masters in medical education
* Approved Educational Supervisor / or previous experience as an ES/CS

* Strong interpersonal, communication written and presentation skills
* Ability to critically appraise and problem solve whilst maintaining objectivity
* Ability to quickly establish personal and professional credibility with colleagues and other key stakeholders

* Proven organisational and time management skills


Experience and Knowledge

* Demonstrable track record of delivery in service and education
* Considerable experience of working with learners and doctors in training in an educational context
* Experience of clinical and educational leadership and innovation, including across multi-professional teams
* Understanding of developments involving the relevant Colleges/Faculties, professional bodies, related NHS organisations and regulatory bodies
* Understanding of current health, social care and education policy & funding streams for healthcare education
* Good working knowledge of the NHS including its structures and processes
