Major Trauma Service Specialist Support Nurse

An exciting opportunity to join the Cambridge Major Trauma Centre at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

We are seeking a Major Trauma Specialist Support Nurse with a specialist interest in major trauma care.

Working as part of the wider Major Trauma Service clinical team you will be responsible for coordinating and supporting the care of major trauma patients from admission through to rehabilitation and discharge.

You will play a key worker role in the case management of major trauma patients, providing a link to ensure good communication and ensuring all aspects of care is coordinated throughout the major trauma pathway. You will liaise between multi disciplines, supporting flow through the system, facilitating timely discharges and transfers, as well as liaising with post‑discharge services. Acting as an advocate for patients throughout their journey and linking with professionals across the wider East of England Trauma Network.

This role is also a great opportunity to further develop your skills and knowledge base to cover all spectrum of the management of major trauma patients and working across multiple trauma specialties within the regional Major Trauma Centre.

These roles are on a 9 month and 12 month fixed term contract / secondment.


Main duties of the job

* Work as a Major Trauma Specialist support nurse within the Major Trauma Service.
* Ensure care is coordinated from admission to discharge for all major trauma patients.
* Facilitate and manage the major trauma pathway, linking with all relevant professionals across the lead in-patients team in the Major Trauma Centre and EoE Trauma Network.
* Assist in developing, implementing and auditing key performance indicators that support the streamlined major trauma patient pathway.
* Coordinate the demands of safe, high quality and high responsive patient care from admission to discharge/repatriation.
* Implement and assist in changes to care provision.
* Provide advice for clinicians, patients and relatives as required relating to major trauma patients.
* Undertake post-discharge patient follow‑ups and feedback to Major Trauma Practitioners and, where required, lead in‑patient teams.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* Evidence of continuous professional development.
* Teaching or mentoring qualification.
* Post registration qualification in speciality or willingness to complete.
* Degree.
* Research Module.
* To possess or working towards Level 1 Major Trauma Nurse competency module.


Experience

* Experience in pathway coordination.
* Evidence of mentorship/preceptorship roles.
* Accept personal accountability for own practice.
* Experience of formal/informal teaching.
* Participation in patient experience initiatives.
* NHS experience.


Knowledge

* Understanding of evidence based practice.
* Understanding of Clinical Governance.
* Understanding and knowledge of specialist field.
* Understanding of major trauma pathway.


Skills

* Good verbal and written communication skills.
* Capable of working as an integral member of a small team.
* Adaptable to changing situations due to both workload and colleague needs.
* Ability to undertake teaching of staff and patients.
* Ability to work unsupervised and manage own workload; effective time management.

* Able to travel as required for the role.
