Role Purpose
We are seeking a hands-on and highly organised Head of Stores to take full operational and strategic responsibility for the company's stores and warehousing function. This role combines day-to-day leadership with long-term planning, ensuring that goods-in, warehousing, kitting, subcontract transfers, waste control, and inventory management are carried out to the highest standards of efficiency, accuracy, and compliance.
As a trusted supplier to the Ministry of Defence, this role demands exceptional focus on traceability, security, and compliance, while also driving continuous improvement to support wider business objectives. The Head of Stores will play a key part in safeguarding our reputation in regulated industries, while enabling operational excellence and delivering real value to the business.
Operational Leadership
* Take full ownership of daily stores activities, ensuring smooth material flow across goods-in, warehousing, kitting, subcontract transfers, and finished product tracking.
* Maintain stores areas in a safe, orderly, and accessible condition at all times.
* Provide hands-on support when required, including booking-in parts, issuing materials, and supporting kitting/works orders.
* Supervise waste disposal processes, ensuring all documentation and environmental compliance are maintained.
Inventory & Systems Control
* Lead the accurate recording of all material movements within ERP/MRP systems, ensuring compliance with business and MoD traceability requirements.
* Drive stock accuracy through perpetual inventory control, cycle counting, and discrepancy resolution.
* Work with Procurement to maintain appropriate stock levels and manage slow-moving or obsolete items.
* Ensure adequate security procedures for valuable or at-risk stocks.
Quality & Compliance
* Partner with Quality to ensure incoming materials are inspected and quarantined where necessary.
* Ensure stores operations comply with HSE standards for storage and handling of dangerous substances, Defence, Rail, and Automotive customer standards, as well as ISO, EN, and environmental certifications.
* Uphold all cyber-security, confidentiality, and non-disclosure requirements demanded by Defence sector contracts.
People Leadership
* Lead, train, and develop the stores team to ensure high standards of safety, accuracy, and efficiency.
* Manage team recruitment, training, and disciplinary processes.
* Set clear operational standards and ensure compliance through regular monitoring and coaching.
* Promote a culture of continuous improvement across the stores function.
Strategic Oversight
* Provide operational KPIs and reporting to the Senior Management Team.
* Support initiatives to reduce waste, improve flow, and optimise material utilisation.
* Ensure full alignment of the stores function with business objectives, Defence sector compliance, and customer requirements.
QUALIFICATIONS
ESSENTIAL
* Minimum 1-3 years' experience in a similar role and in a similar metal working, engineering sector
* Experience of working with MRP / ERP systems in a hands-on, leadership role
* Understanding of an Engineering of Manufacturing environment
* Ability to understand BoM's and Kitting lists
* Completion of Secondary Education
* Valid Counterbalance Forklift Truck licence
DESIRABLE
* Experience of working within the guidelines of, EN, ISO 2834, ISO 14001,
* Experience of Defence (AQAP's, Mil Std's), Rail (RIS), and Automotive (IATF), standards
