Job Description
Company: Oceyon
Start Date: March (flexible)
Engagement Type: Mandate / Consulting Basis
Location Preference: Europe-based (remote with occasional travel)
Role Overview
Oceyon is seeking an experienced Marine Geologist to support offshore and nearshore seabed assessment activities related to our maritime exploration activities. The role focuses on understanding and predicting how seabed environments evolve over time, with a strong emphasis on sedimentation dynamics, erosion processes, seabed stability, and hydrodynamic influences. The role also supports Oceyon’s commitment to responsible, low-impact maritime exploration.
This expertise will directly inform:
* Risk-reduction strategies prior to offshore mobilization (migration, exposure)
* Exploration methodology selection
* Site feasibility and operational planning
This is a mandate-based, advisory role, designed to bring senior geological expertise into specific project phases rather than a full-time employment position.
Key Responsibilities
* Seabed Evolution Analysis
* Assess how seabed conditions evolve over time due to sedimentation, erosion, scouring, and seabed mobility.
* Interpret how historical and ongoing seabed processes may have altered geometry, distribution, and burial depth.
* Sediment Dynamics & Stability Assessment
* Analyze sediment types, stratigraphy, consolidation, and mobility to evaluate seabed stability and bearing capacity.
* Identify risks related to liquefaction, slope instability, or re-suspension during maritime operations.
* Hydrodynamic & Environmental Interpretation
* Evaluate the impact of currents, tides, wave action, and storm events on seabed morphology and wreck exposure or burial.
* Support predictions of migration pathways and potential reburial scenarios.
* Operational Risk Reduction
* Provide geological input to help select the safest and most efficient exploration approaches (e.g. dredging vs. targeted excavation, grab vs. suction methods).
* Identify geotechnical and environmental risks prior to mobilization to minimize offshore uncertainty and cost escalation.
* Contribute to environmentally responsible site approaches by minimising seabed disturbance and unnecessary intervention
* Data Review & Integration
* Interpret and integrate available geophysical and geotechnical data (multibeam bathymetry, side-scan sonar, sub-bottom profiler, cores, grab samples).
* Work collaboratively with survey, engineering, and operations teams to translate geological findings into practical operational guidance.
Required Profile & Background
Education
* MSc or PhD in Marine Geology, Geophysics, Oceanography, Sedimentology, or a closely related discipline.
Professional Experience
* Minimum 8–10 years of relevant experience in marine geology or seabed characterization.
* Proven experience working with:
* Offshore structures, maritime exploration
* Offshore energy, subsea construction, dredging, or salvage-related projects
* Strong understanding of seabed processes in shallow and deep waters.
Technical Expertise
* Solid knowledge of:
* Sedimentation and erosion processes
* Seabed stability and geotechnical behavior
* Hydrodynamics and seabed–current interactions
* Hands-on experience interpreting:
* Multibeam echosounder (MBES) data
* Side-scan sonar
* Sub-bottom profiler data
* Sediment cores and grab samples
Analytical & Advisory Skills
* Ability to translate geological complexity into clear operational recommendations.
* Comfortable working in early-stage, uncertainty-driven projects where incomplete data must still inform decisions.
* Comfortable acting as an independent expert advisor, challenging assumptions and supporting high-stakes decisions
* Experience producing concise technical notes, risk assessments, or decision-support inputs for management and operations teams.
* Comfortable working with uncertainty, supporting decision-making where outcomes are not binary
Engagement & Working Model
* Mandate-based engagement starting in March.
* Flexible workload depending on project phase (desktop studies, survey review, operational planning).
* Primarily remote, with potential short-site visits or workshops if required.
* Preference for Europe-based candidates for time zone alignment
What We Offer
* A unique opportunity to shape our maritime geology endeavour in a pioneering maritime exploration company.
* Direct impact on high-profile international exploration projects (across all oceans)
* Dynamic, international team of entrepreneurs, technologists, and explorers.
* A role where geological expertise directly shapes high-stakes decisions, not just reports
* Competitive mandate based compensation with attractive incentive.
