Job Description
From our office based in Warrington and out in the field, we monitor sonde data, interpret both ecological and chemical information, conduct field surveys, and produce detailed reports to inform our partners and support environmental protection through advice, regulation, and enforcement. This role involves engaging with the wider community through collaborative project delivery and analysis of water quality data.
Responsibilities
* Conduct aquatic ecological surveys, including identification of macroinvertebrates, algae, fish, and freshwater plant species.
* Deploy and interpret hydroacoustic sondes and perform water‑quality chemical analysis.
* Analyze and report on collected data, maintaining quality control and updating databases.
* Support incident response for pollution, drought, and flooding events.
* Participate in fieldwork and occasional overnight stays across Greater Manchester, Merseyside, and Cheshire.
Qualifications and Skills
* Driving licence (required); valid driving, good bankside mobility and swimming ability essential.
* Ecological technical degree or equivalent relevant freshwater ecology experience.
* Foundation in species identification, microscopy, dichotomous keys and macroinvertebrate, plant, fish and habitat survey methodology.
* Experience with data population, interpretation, and reporting.
* Planning and conducting surveys, effective communication and teamwork.
* Knowledge of risk assessment and health & safety procedures.
* Experience in hydroacoustic surveying, boat driving, data visualisation and water‑quality statistical analysis is advantageous.
Training & Development
* Training will be provided in river habitat survey, freshwater macroinvertebrate and plant identification, as well as hydroacoustic methods where required.
