SEN Tutor Salary: £25 - £35 per hour Job Description The role of the Special Educational Needs (SEN) Tutor involves providing tailored educational support to pupils with additional learning needs. The tutor works closely with pupils to identify learning barriers and implements personalised strategies to facilitate academic progress and personal development. This position requires a patient and adaptive approach, recognising the unique needs of each pupil and fostering a supportive learning environment. Key Responsibilities Deliver one-to-one or small group tuition to pupils with special educational needs, adapting teaching methods to suit individual learning requirements. Develop and implement personalised learning plans in line with the pupils’ Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and targets. Assess pupils’ progress regularly and adjust teaching approaches to optimise learning outcomes. Provide constructive feedback to pupils and maintain accurate records of sessions, progress and behavioural observations. Collaborate with parents, guardians and educational professionals to ensure consistency and continuity in support. Utilise a variety of teaching resources and assistive technologies to enhance learning experiences. Promote pupils’ confidence, motivation and independence within their learning journey. Maintain a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment that respects the dignity and individuality of each pupil. Participate in relevant training and professional development activities to stay current with SEN best practises and legislation. Required Qualifications Relevant teaching qualification or recognised certification in special educational needs. Current enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check or willingness to obtain one prior to commencement. Qualification in safeguarding or child protection training. Education A minimum of a Level 3 qualification in education, special educational needs, or an equivalent field. Additional training or qualifications related to SEN are highly desirable. Experience Proven experience working with children or young people with special educational needs. Experience delivering tailored teaching sessions and adapting materials to meet diverse needs. Familiarity with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and their practical application. Knowledge and Skills Comprehensive understanding of various types of special educational needs and associated learning difficulties. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, enabling effective engagement with pupils, parents and professionals. Ability to plan, organise and deliver tailored learning programmes. Patience, empathy and resilience when working with pupils facing educational challenges. Competence in using educational technology and resources to support learning. Sound knowledge of safeguarding procedures and commitment to pupil welfare. Preferred Qualifications Experience working within a school or educational setting. Qualification in behaviour management or therapeutic approaches related to SEN. First aid certification. Working Conditions The position is temporary and part-time, with flexibility in working hours to accommodate pupils’ timetables. Work takes place primarily within educational settings or pupils’ homes, adhering to health and safety standards. Some travel within Oxfordshire and surrounding areas may be required. The role demands adaptability to various learning environments and occasional work outside standard school hours.
