Junior Commissioning / Technician - MV Switchgear (BESS)
Location: Edinburgh, United Kingdom
Contract: £35 - £45 per hour. Outside IR35
Duration: 2-4 months (extension possible)
We are seeking a Junior / Commissioning Technician to assist in the testing and commissioning of medium-voltage switchgear and protection systems on a large battery energy storage project. This is an excellent opportunity for someone early in their career to gain hands-on experience working with 33kV switchboards, digital protection relays, and auxiliary systems under the guidance of an experienced commissioning team.
You will support inspections, wiring checks, and basic testing of protection and auxiliary systems while contributing to the successful delivery of a major renewable energy infrastructure project.
Duties
Assist in commissioning of 33kV switchgear, protection, and auxiliary systems
Conduct inspections, wiring checks, and insulation resistance testing of control and protection circuits
Support primary and secondary injection testing of protection relays under supervision
Assist with high-potential testing of switchboards and voltage indication systems
Support IEC 61850 functional testing and interlocking checks
Aid SCADA I/O verification and control system energisation tasks
Help with commissioning auxiliary systems including battery systems, UPS, LVAC switchboards, and transformers
Support energisation and on-load verification tasks alongside senior engineers
Requirements
Electrical Engineering or Electrical/Electronic Technician qualification (HNC/HND/Level 3 NVQ, or equivalent)
Some exposure to medium-voltage switchgear or protection systems preferred, but not essential
Willingness to learn and work under the guidance of senior engineers
Ability to read basic electrical schematics and wiring diagrams
CSCS / ECS card / Safety Passport / CCNSG (preferred)
